For the first time since before I entered Congress, our economy shrank.
That’s right, Trump’s first quarter in office was our worst economy in years. And the reason is pretty simple: Tariffs.
Tariffs are a tax on you, me, and every other hardworking average American.
In certain situations, targeted tariffs can be effective, absolutely. But the current tariffs, and blanket tariffs in general, are completely reckless. From the car dealership to the grocery store to the gas pump, you’ll pay more. And that’s if local businesses can afford the supplies to keep shelves stocked.
And none of this has been a surprise to anyone but Donald Trump and his enablers. Every economist – Republican and Democrat – predicted tariffs of this size and scale would hurt American businesses. And right now, in my visits across IL-17 – from the mom-and-pop store on Main Street to national leaders like Caterpillar – everyone is feeling the pain right now.
I’ve introduced legislation to prevent this tariff madness from jacking up costs and killing jobs, and I hope you’ll rally behind me as I push to restore consistency and normalcy to our economy.
