Dear John,

We celebrated when Energy Secretary Ed Miliband borrowed our 2023 campaign phrase in promising to “unleash a solar rooftop revolution”. And last week we secured a big campaign win with the government now planning for solar panels to be fitted on all new-build homes in England by 2027. This progress is thanks to you.

In the past two years, thousands of you have taken part in our campaign, calling on the government to set new and ambitious targets for clean energy across the country. What's more, recent YouGov polling shows this view is widespread: 82% of the public support rooftop solar on new homes and commercial buildings.

In January this year, over 10,000 of you showed up again to pressure the government to adopt the Sunshine Bill – a proposal for solar panels to be installed on all new suitable homes.

Your enthusiasm for rooftop solar is inspiring – let’s now get rooftop solar rolled out across warehouses, car parks, and existing homes.

What have we been up to?

We’re engaging with government ministers, energy developers, farmers, community-led project pioneers and our local groups to better understand how to speed up this promised rooftop revolution.

In particular, we’re asking ministers responsible for Clean Power in the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero to look after our countryside when harnessing the sun’s power. We’ve been invited to give feedback on the government’s update to the Future Homes Standard, which they have now promised will require rooftop solar on new homes as standard.

And we’ve been hard at work ensuring that the Planning and Infrastructure Bill and the Land Use Framework make strategic use of our finite land and prioritise rooftop solar. Not to mention our CEO Roger Mortlock’s great panel discussion, hosted by The Wildlife Trusts, on how we can meet our energy needs whilst ensuring a thriving countryside.

How can you help?

As you can tell, it’s been full speed ahead for our team – but now we need your help again. Find out what our next priorities are for the rooftop revolution and sign our pledge to let us know you’re with us.

Our rooftop solar pledge is the first step in a number of actions pushing for real change, ahead of more plans expected from the government on clean power. Over the next few months, we want to make as much noise as possible about getting rooftop solar on our homes and wasted space and there will be plenty you can do to help, so stay tuned.

Thank you for your unwavering support so far – I can’t wait to get stuck in with you and drive forward more change,

Lola
