Dear John,

My most important job in Congress is to make government work for you. That’s why I strongly oppose the president’s budget proposal, which would make deep cuts to the services our community relies on.

This proposal slashes funding for education by $12 billion, leaving our schools with fewer resources and less support for the students who need it the most. It cuts over $33 billion from Health and Human Services, threatening access to care for seniors, children and working families. It guts investments in housing, science and environmental protection — including a 44% cut to the Department of Housing and Urban Development and over 50% in cuts to the EPA and the National Science Foundation.

These cuts have real consequences. They would make it harder for our kids to succeed in school, harder for families to find safe and affordable housing and harder to keep our air and water clean.

Meanwhile, I continue working with my colleagues to defend the Constitution and protect our communities. I joined 182 House Democrats in filing a brief with the Supreme Court to defend birthright citizenship, and I’m backing legislation to rein in President Trump's emergency tariff powers and reassert Congress' authority over this 

I also joined a letter led by Congressman Glenn Ivey calling for justice in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia — a man who was wrongfully deported due to what the administration itself admitted was an administrative error. I’m urging the administration to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling and reunite him with his family.

Now more than ever, we need to fight for a budget — and a country — that works for everyone. I’m proud to be doing that work on your behalf every day.

Marking 100 Days of the Trump Administration

President Trump’s first 100 days in office have been defined by chaos, corruption and incompetence.

The president has pursued an extreme agenda that pushes the boundaries of the law and tests the very fabric of our democracy. These policies don’t just affect Washington; they hit home right here in Sacramento County—putting health care access at risk, targeting immigrant communities and threatening the economic security of hardworking families.

Last week, I joined my Democratic colleagues to call out the Administration’s broken promises to the American people and to reaffirm our commitment to protecting our values, upholding the Constitution and ensuring our government works for everyone.

Supporting Sacramento Schools

I recently met with school board members from across the Sacramento region to talk about the challenges our local schools are facing — from broadband access and student data privacy to special education funding, free school meals and recruiting great teachers. 

I'm proud to support increased federal funding for programs that help connect schools to high-speed internet and ensure students with disabilities get the services and support they need to thrive in the classroom. I’ll keep fighting in Congress to oppose GOP cuts to education and make sure every student has the tools they need to succeed.

Working to Protect Medicaid

As a doctor, I’ve seen the difference Medicaid makes in people’s lives — from keeping kids healthy to helping seniors afford their medications. I recently joined my colleagues in the Democratic Doctors Caucus to strategize around how we can protect this vital program from Republican cuts. We’re working to make sure families in Sacramento County and across the country can keep getting the care they rely on.

Congressional Art Competition Winner!

Congratulations to Parker from El Camino High School for winning the 2025 Congressional Art Competition!

Parker’s “The Conflagration of Man” won the most votes out of 23 pieces of art sent in by talented high school students throughout our district.

I look forward to seeing Parker’s artwork hanging in the U.S. Capitol! Thank you to our participants, judges and to everyone who voted.

THIS WEEK: Afghan Support Center Resource Fair 

Sacramento is hosting an Afghan Support Center Resource Fair this week through May 9th at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center.

This no-cost event is designed to support vulnerable Afghans—including those who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with our servicemembers in Afghanistan—as they resettle in the United States.

Attendees will have access to essential services like housing assistance, immigration legal support, food aid, medical and ESL resources, and more. Interpretation will be available in Dari and Pashto.
