VIDEO OF THE DAY: Trump goes on bewildering rant, fully detaches from reality
Asked about his hare-brained plan to reopen Alcatraz, Donald delivered a truly bizarre rant for the ages. Sometimes, you just need to see it transcribed in all its glory: "Well, I guess I was supposed to be a movie maker. We're talking — we started with the movie making and will end. I mean, it — it represents something very strong, very powerful in terms of law and order. Our country needs law and order. Alcatraz is, uh, I would say, the ultimate, right? Alcatraz. Sing Sing and Alcatraz. Eh, the movies. But, uh, it's right now a museum, believe it or not, a lot of people go there. It housed the, uh, most violent criminals in the world, and nobody ever escaped. One person almost got there. But they, as you know the story, they found his clothing rather badly ripped up. And, uh, it was a lot of shark bites, lot of, a lot of problems. Nobody's ever escaped from Alcatraz. And just represented something, uh, strong having to do with law and order. We need law and order in this country. And so we're going to, uh, look at it. Some of the people up here are going to be working very hard on that. And, uh, we had a little conversation. I think it's going to be very interesting. We'll see if we can, uh, bring it back in large form, add a lot. But I think it represents something. Right now it's, uh, a big hunk that's sitting there rusting and rotting, uh, very, uh, you look at it, it's sort of a [unintelligible]. You saw that picture that was put out. It's sort of amazing. But it sort of represents something that's both horrible and beautiful and strong and miserable. Weak. It's got a lot of, it's got a lot of qualities that are interesting. And I think they, they make a point. Okay."

Trump offers migrants free airline tickets and $1,000 stipend if they self-deport
The Trump regime rolled out its latest master plan to rid the country of (brown) people it has deemed undesirable, this time turning to straight bribery. The Department of Homeland Security is apparently now offering free airline tickets and a $1,000 incentive to some unauthorized immigrants if they sign up for self-deportation and return to their home countries voluntarily. While such a plan on its face might seem considerably less heinous than disappearing immigrants to foreign prisons in the dead of night, it still requires a massive leap of faith on the part of migrants to trust an administration so willing to demonize and dehumanize entire ethnic groups for short-term political gain. And that's to say nothing of what awaits them when they return to whatever dire circumstances they fled in the first place with a much-publicized wad of American cash in their pockets.

Proven winner Chris Pappas announces bid to keep crucial New Hampshire Senate seat blue
Chris Pappas for Senate: Now that Senator Shaheen is retiring, Chris Pappas is aiming to make history by becoming the first openly gay man elected to the U.S. Senate and keep a vitally important Senate seat in Democratic hands. Rep. Chris Pappas has served New Hampshire for 20 years and has a proven track record of taking on the big fights– from battling Big Pharma to lowering drug prices to facing off with predatory companies that target veterans — while winning election after election in one of the swingiest districts in the country. If we're to have any chance of derailing Trump's appalling agenda of cruelty, chaos, and corruption, we need to retake the Senate, we need to protect this must-win seat from whichever MAGA extremist tries to snatch it away. Will you help jump-start Chris Pappas' campaign with a donation?
Freight shipping CEO buys $20 million of Trump coin explicitly to influence policy
Trump and his cronies are far past even the most cursory efforts to pretend they aren't engaging in flagrant, widespread, pay-for-play influence peddling, but it's still shocking to see a CEO just openly admit to it. Javier Selgas, the CEO of the Freight Technologies Inc. shipping company, has bought $20 MILLION worth of Trump's shitcoin explicitly to try to influence his trade policy, telling the media that it is "an effective way to advocate for fair, balanced and free trade between Mexico and the US." Will money work where common sense, public outcry, and angry red numbers won't? Doubt it.

Stephen Miller: Marco Rubio will be the "Kissinger of our time"
Oh, you mean this fella? Trump's deputy chief of staff and favorite white nationalist might genuinely hold Sec. of State Marco Rubio in high esteem, but calling anyone the "Kissinger of our time" and NOT referring to the MILLIONS of innocent people he ruthlessly killed is truly next-level myopia. That being said, Rubio is relatively young, and if the MAGA cult leader succeeds in dismantling the guardrails of American democracy and declaring himself president king in perpetuity, there's no telling what hellish exploits this gang of radicals might manage to unleash over the long term.
83-year-old Democrat says quitting Congress would be to "give up my life"
James Clyburn, now in his 17th term in Congress, has served South Carolina's 6th district for more than three decades, and when asked about any plans to retire, the former Democratic whip replied, "What the hell I'm supposed to do now? What do you want — me to give up my life?” Aside from the melodrama and the fact that Clyburn has accepted more contributions from the pharmaceutical lobby than any other sitting rep, there's a big problem with that answer. Serving in Congress isn't about you! It's about your constituents, about the country, and tragically — and in no small part because older officials refused to recognize when it was time to step aside for the good of the country — it is about saving democracy. Clyburn is an icon whose service is to be admired for a multitude of reasons, but he is also of another time. His answer to the question of retirement alone is reason for him to step down and clear the way for someone focused on the American people rather than himself.
Brian Kemp will not run for US Senate, igniting GOP scramble
Georgia's Republican governor will not be challenging Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in next year's midterms, dealing a huge blow to Republican leaders who saw the so-called "moderate" as their best chance to retake the seat. Instead, the GOP will now get to enjoy a bloody primary fight, and considering the quality of candidates the state party has nominated in previous elections — which includes a former NFL star with a domestic abuse rap sheet and a literal pedophile — the odds are high this too will turn into a shit show. Too bad, so sad.
Declassified memo shows Trump’s own intel agencies reject his claim about notorious gang
A declassified US intelligence memo obtained by The New York Times contradicts a claim by Donald Trump that the government of Venezuela controls the Tren de Aragua gang. In March, the MAGA cult leader invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to justify the deportation of more than 200 Venezuelans to El Salvador, where they are being incarcerated without due process. The act has been invoked just three times: the War of 1812 and both world wars. During WWII, the legislation was used to intern people of Japanese, Italian, and German descent. The Trump administration – save for those pesky intelligence agencies – maintains that Tren de Aragua is controlled by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, a convenient position to stake out if facts are malleable, historical precedent is meaningless, and enacting a radical agenda is your primary concern.

Trump's Justice Department just sided with Biden administration on abortion pill case
Donald Trump’s Department of Justice sided with the Biden administration’s defense of mifepristone on Monday in an ongoing federal lawsuit over the abortion pill. It’s an unexpected move for the anti-abortion administration, and experts warned HuffPost that it’s actually a calculated political move to delay the war on abortion care. Even though the Trump administration is ideologically aligned with the plaintiffs in the case — state attorneys general from Missouri, Idaho, and Kansas — Trump’s brief supports Biden’s original motion to dismiss by reinforcing the same technical legal defenses. The Trump administration is facing a litany of other lawsuits from Democratic-led states and likely needs to make the same technical legal arguments Biden did in the mifepristone case in order to stay consistent with the kinds of arguments they need to make in other cases, Julia Kaye, senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Project, said. There's always a catch.
