The SAFE Act would permanently ban domestic horse slaughter in the United States and stop the export of American horses for slaughter abroad—practices that 80% of Americans support banning. It is way past time this bill is passed due to the sheer brutality these horses must endure. Slaughter is never a humane end for horses. Equipment and practices are proven unsuitable for rendering horses unconscious due to their physiology and instinctive flight response, resulting in prolonged pain and suffering. The fear and distress horses experience in the slaughterhouse environment often leads to panic, increasing the risk of serious injury before they are slaughtered.

What’s worse is that many of these slaughter-bound horses are tragically denied a second chance at a happy life because “kill buyers,” supplying the foreign slaughter plants show up at horse auctions and outbid legitimate horse owners, rescues and sanctuaries. They have even been known to impersonate rescues to trick owners into selling their horses for meat!
