I just introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2025. And it has never been
more important to revive this legislation.

The assault weapons ban was a vital tool in the struggle to reduce gun
violence and mass shootings. It saved lives. It worked. And I’m honored to
try and carry on a small part of the giant legacy of Dianne Feinstein and
work to ban these weapons of war that have led to the most terrible mass
casualty events in our communities.

I’ve long been a champion of gun safety legislation — inspired by the
leadership of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein, who was thrust into the
national spotlight by an act of gun violence perpetrated against San
Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.

She pushed the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban over the finish line in
the Senate, which prohibited the manufacturing and sale of assault weapons
and large-capacity magazines. And she never gave up her fight to end gun
violence. Nearly three decades after that ban, she cast one of the
deciding votes for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — the most
significant gun safety legislation since 1994.

I knew that stepping up to run for the Senate brought a responsibility to
try and carry on the amazing legacy of Dianne Feinstein. She showed what
it means to lead with courage. The terrible reality is that far too many
families have been devastated by acts of gun violence. And for far too
long, our country, especially members of the Republican Party, have
refused to act because they’re afraid of the NRA.

I see why they’re afraid. Mere hours after introducing the Assault Weapons
Ban of 2025, the NRA attacked me repeatedly. They will do and spend
anything to prevent real progress. At the expense of human lives —
parents, children, community members, teachers, grocery store workers, and
countless others.

We need the courage to act,
