Fighting for Hoosiers: Lower Costs, Better Access, and a Stronger Future

As I recently completed this legislative session, I wanted to take a moment to highlight the work I did to make life better for Hoosier families. From lowering health care costs to expanding broadband access in rural communities, I focused on real solutions that put Hoosiers first.

Too often, government policies create unnecessary barriers. Whether it was skyrocketing insurance costs or outdated infrastructure that left some communities without the resources they need to thrive. My goal as your Senator is simple: cut through the red tape and ensure tax dollars are used effectively to improve the lives of all Indiana residents.

Here’s a look at some of the key issues I tackled during the session:

PBM/Healthcare

I’ve continued my fight to rein in the out-of-control costs driven by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) here in Indiana. After a revealing audit uncovered more than $322 million in potential taxpayer savings and exposed widespread PBM abuses—like spread pricing, vertical integration, and a serious lack of transparency—I worked diligently to include key PBM reform language in a current healthcare bill as this legislative session came to a close. These reforms are designed to break up monopolistic practices and make sure PBMs serve the best interests of patients—not their own profit margins.

Defending Religious Freedom Across the Globe

Earlier this month, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution I authored to recognize the persecution of Christians in the Artsakh Republic. This measure urges Indiana’s congressional delegation to stop sending military aid to countries like Armenia and Turkey where Christians are being attacked for practicing their faith.

Religious freedom is a core value here in Indiana, and it’s something we should uphold not only within our borders, but across the world.

I'm honored to have championed Senate Concurrent Resolution 32 and stand with the many Hoosiers in our community who care deeply about this issue.

A Responsible Budget That Protects Your Tax Dollars

The senate has officially passed the State’s next two year budget—and I’m proud to say it’s balanced, responsible, and focused on keeping Indiana strong.

Even with modest revenue growth and rising Medicaid costs, we’ve managed to put together a budget that doesn’t overspend but still prioritizes what matters most:

  • Education: $18.9 billion for K-12 funding, including a $870 million increase over the biennium.

  • Teachers: A new, more targeted three-tier Teacher Appreciation Grant system.

  • Mental Health: Continued investment in mental health services.

  • Economic Development: Strategic tools to keep Indiana competitive.

  • Fiscal Health: 47% of total budget.

Expanding High-Speed Internet Access for Rural Indiana

In today’s world, having reliable internet isn’t a luxury, it’s essential. Yet, too many Hoosiers, especially in rural areas, still struggle with poor or no broadband access.

I’ve been making real progress on fixing this issue. The Indiana Broadband Office (IBO) just shared an update on the first round of the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) Program, which helps bring broadband to underserved areas. Here’s what we’ve seen so far:

✔️ 755 applications submitted by internet providers
✔️
94% of eligible locations received at least one bid
✔️
82% of eligible locations had multiple bids, making the process more competitive

I’ve been working on broadband access for years because I know what it means for families, schools, and businesses. In 2021, I helped launch the Indiana Broadband Connectivity Portal, allowing Hoosiers to request service for their area. Now, I’m building on that progress with Senate Bill 502, which will require broadband companies that receive state or federal funding to work collaboratively with electric utilities to report their progress quarterly. This ensures we’re getting service to the places that need it most—faster and more efficiently.

Indiana is heading in the right direction, but there’s still work to do. I’ll keep fighting to make sure every Hoosier, no matter where they live, has access to the high-speed internet they need.

Protecting Women’s Sports

I’ve always believed in fairness and safety, especially when it comes to our schools and student-athletes. That’s why I proudly supported House Enrolled Act 1041, legislation that ensures women’s college sports remain protected by preventing biological males from competing on women’s teams.

This bill builds on past efforts, including protections we passed in 2022 for K-12 girls’ athletics, and follows executive orders by Governor Braun and President Trump aimed at preserving equal opportunity in sports.

Indiana is sending a clear message: we stand for fairness, we stand for women, and we stand for common sense.

Past and Present Staff

In conclusion of the legislative session, I recently gathered with current and former staff for a few updated photos. It was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the incredible team—past and present—who have supported my work at the Statehouse and in the district. Many former staff members couldn’t join me, as they’re now serving in Washington, D.C., or building careers in the private sector across the nation. Each one played a vital role in helping me serve the people of Indiana. Their dedication, professionalism, and behind-the-scenes efforts made a lasting impact, and I’m deeply thankful for their service.

Zack Sand (First photo, standing to my left) - Zack Sand was a valued member of my team, bringing energy, insight, and dedication to every role he held during his time at the Statehouse. From his start as a Senate intern to his leadership as a Legislative Assistant and beyond, Zack's passion for public service and strong grasp of policy made a lasting impact on our work. Now as President of Sand Strategies, he continues to serve Indiana with the same commitment that defined his time on my staff.

Luke Conner (in the first photo, standing to my right) - Luke Conner was a dedicated member of my team, offering valuable insight on education policy and quality of life initiatives. A graduate of the University of Saint Francis and a former Senate intern, Luke played a key role in our legislative efforts. He now serves as Government Affairs Manager at Sand Strategies, continuing his commitment to public service and meaningful policy impact.

Archit Malik (in the first photo, two to my right) - Archit Malik currently serves as my Legislative Assistant in the Indiana State Senate, where he applies his technical expertise and policy experience to support my legislative work. A Purdue University graduate with a degree in Computer Science, Archit previously served as a Legislative Intern with the Indiana Senate Republicans and a Legal Intern with The Garrett Co. His strong analytical skills and dedication to public service make him an invaluable part of my team.

Zeb Lewis (in the third photo, second row, first on the left) - Zeb Lewis got his start in public service as an intern in my office, where he demonstrated a sharp legal mind and a strong work ethic. He went on to clerk for several law firms and the Marion County Superior Court before serving as an Associate Attorney at Lewis Wagner, LLP. Today, Zeb is a Staff Attorney at the Legislative Services Agency, supporting Indiana’s legislative process with the same commitment that made him such a standout during his time with me.

Paul Tricou (in the third photo, third row, center) - Paul Tricou began his career as an intern in my office and quickly distinguished himself through his attention to detail and understanding of policy. He’s now a Legislative Assistant and Floor Supervisor for the Indiana State Senate, where he continues to support senators, research policy issues, and help manage office operations. His experience includes work with the Senate Majority Fiscal Team and various campaigns, and his dedication to effective public service has made him an important part of my team.

Dawna Smith (in the third photo, second row, far right) - Dawna Smith served as my Legislative Assistant, where she supported legislative efforts and helped manage constituent services. She now continues her career in public affairs and policy at AES Indiana. I’m grateful for the time she spent working alongside me and for the professionalism she brought to every task.

Emily Mertz (in the third photo, first row, far left) - Emily Mertz is currently a Press Secretary Intern in my office, where she supports my communications, press outreach, and photography efforts. From crafting press releases to assisting with media strategy, Emily’s work has enhanced the way I communicate with the public and highlight key issues across the district.

Carson Kitchen (in the third photo, third row, far left) - Carson Kitchen is one of my current interns, assisting with legislative duties and constituent services. As a student at Huntington University and a native of my hometown, Carson brings a strong local connection and a genuine passion for public service. His work ethic and community perspective are valuable additions to my team.

Parker Zent (in the third photo, first row, far right) - Parker Zent worked in my Senate office, where he supported day-to-day operations and contributed to my legislative goals. His time with me helped shape his path in government affairs, and he now serves as a Program Manager in the Indiana Treasurer of State’s office, where he helps administer programs that benefit Hoosier students and families.

Paige Gehlhausen - Paige Gehlhausen serves as my Press Secretary, managing media relations, communications, and public outreach. A graduate of Indiana University Bloomington with a degree in Communication and Media Studies, Paige brings a strategic mindset and strong marketing experience to my Senate office. Her leadership in communications plays a key role in keeping constituents informed and engaged.
