Hey there, it’s Janet Mills, Governor of Maine. Tonight, I have a major update for you on my state’s legal battle with Donald Trump, and I wanted you to hear it from me first:

I told him I’d see him in court. Well we did see him in court, and we won.

John, I’ve always had respect for the rule of law.

When I visited the White House in February, President Donald Trump chose to single me out in a room full of governors from both parties and threatened to unilaterally withhold federal funding from Maine school children unless we fell in line with his personal demands. When I stood my ground, he claimed he was “the law,” never mind Congress or the states.

I told him I’d see him in court.

Then, in what looked to me like a ransom note from this administration, Donald Trump decided to unlawfully freeze funds for Maine school children. My administration didn’t hesitate – I followed through on my promise, and we took him to court.

Now, we’ve officially won against Trump, and millions of dollars in funds for 172,000 Maine school children have been restored.

But let me make one thing clear: this is proof that the fight against Trump’s extremism will come down to the states.

Democratic governors like myself refuse to be bullied. We will not be intimidated by the President’s threats. And I am confident when we see him in court, we will win time and time again.
