[May is Mental Health Awareness Month]([link removed])

This May for Mental Health Awareness Month, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is shining a light on resilience –– an ability we all have deeply rooted within us, and also a muscle that can be strengthened.

Our new campaign, [In This Together: Building Emotional Resilience in Ourselves and Our Communities]([link removed]), encourages you to move beyond basic “self-care” to consider true resilience in its many forms. The campaign also highlights concrete steps each of us can take to develop our personal resilience, and help others around us to do the same.

In a video address for our In This Together campaign, AFSP Chief Medical Officer Christine Yu Moutier, M.D., reminds us that resilience is not the exception, but the rule. Resilience is at our core –– but there are things we can do to enhance it in ourselves. [Watch Dr. Yu Moutier’s video]([link removed]) to learn more about the overall idea of resilience, and how it relates to mental health.

We also encourage you to visit our ["Building Resilience" webpage]([link removed]) to learn more actions you can take to strengthen resilience, like increasing connections with others, increasing meaning or purpose in our lives, working on thought patterns, and practicing general healthy habits.

Stay up to date on all the exciting events happening at AFSP throughout the month of May. Here are just a few of our upcoming events and new media:

- May 6 — The next episode of AFSP’s [Strong Talk]([link removed]) podcast will feature AFSP Vice President for Health Equity and Engagement Victor (Vic) Armstrong, MSW, in conversation with AFSP Minnesota Chapter volunteer Ray Stenglein about mental health and suicide prevention in the construction industry, as part of Construction Safety Week. Previous the podcast here.

- May 8 @ 2 p.m. ET — Learn about interventions that can reduce suicide risk and health care costs by registering for the webinar, [Reducing Suicide Risk Through Primary Care: How the Collaborative Care Model can Help Save Lives]([link removed]).

- May 15 @ 3 p.m. ET — In the latest [#RealConvo Concert]([link removed]) combining interview and musical performance, AFSP Director of Writing and Entertainment Outreach Brett Wean is joined by musician Jonah Marais of the renowned band Why Don’t We. Marais is now a solo artist featured in Amazon's 2025 Artists to Watch campaign, and opens up about his own mental health journey and how he finds resilience.

This May and beyond, let’s check in on our own resilience, take stock of where we are, and give ourselves permission to make small changes that can have a big impact.
