Dear John,

Good news! WI Representative Melissa Sargent and WI Senator LaTonya Johnson introduced a bill (LRB-3949) to make sure a background check is conducted for all gun sales in Wisconsin!

Now, it's up to us to make sure all of our legislators sign on to co-sponsors this bill before the August 26th deadline! 

Here's what has us worried: We're hearing that some Republican legislators, including leadership, plan to stand in the way of this lifesaving legislation. Indeed, Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald explained that he doesn't support universal background checks because his rural, gun-owning, Republican voters oppose it: "[T]he trouble there's going to be, there's always a constituency who vote Republican...And they're going to be opposed to it."

But he is wrong! According to an August 14, 2019, FOX News Poll, 89% of Republicans support universal background checks (as do 91% of "Rural People" and 93% of "People in Gun Owning Households")!

Tell your legislators to co-sponsor LRB-3949, a bill requiring background checks on all gun sales. The deadline for co-sponsorship is August 26th, so encourage your legislator to co-sponsor today!
