[Construction Safety Week May 5-9]

This week, May 5–9, we ask you to join us in recognizing [Construction Safety Week]([link removed]), of which the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is a proud sponsor!

At AFSP, we know that mental health is just as important as physical health. This is especially true for the construction industry, which research shows has one of the highest suicide rates of any profession in the U.S. But we also know from research that suicide can often be prevented. That’s why we’ve joined with Bechtel for a multiyear partnership specifically dedicated to preventing suicide in the construction community. In an unprecedented effort to address this crisis, Bechtel made a $7-million, five-year commitment to its partnership with AFSP –– the largest-ever pledge received by AFSP and the largest single donation ever made by the Bechtel Group Foundation. You can read more about the partnership [here]([link removed]).

To celebrate the hard work and commitment of construction industry professionals, and to help empower their physical and mental safety, we’re highlighting these stories, resources, events, and programs to help you learn more about construction suicide prevention:

- Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for the Construction Industry –– This week, AFSP will deliver presentations of Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for the Construction Industry. This new program, based on AFSP's flagship suicide prevention education program, is facilitated by a construction industry professional and will provide a 20-minute overview of suicide in the construction industry, risk factors and warning signs of suicide, and strategies to prevent it. The remaining time will be followed by Q&A and information on how construction companies across the U.S can bring this presentation to jobsites and offices. [Register here to attend a session.]([link removed])

- "Building a Path to Suicide Prevention in the Construction Industry" –– The latest episode of AFSP’s [Strong Talk]([link removed]) podcast, airing May 6, features AFSP Vice President for Health Equity and Engagement Victor (Vic) Armstrong, MSW, in conversation with AFSP Minnesota Chapter volunteer Ray Stenglein about mental health and suicide prevention in the construction industry. [Preview the podcast here.]([link removed])

- Construction Hike for Hope –– The Construction Hike for Hope is a series of local hiking events hosted by AFSP in communities across the country to raise much-needed awareness and funds for mental health and suicide prevention in the construction industry. This Construction Safety Week, all of us at AFSP remind you that mental health is just as important as physical health. By attending Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for the Construction Industry, listening to Strong Talk with Ray Stenglein, or supporting a Construction Hike for Hope, you’re helping us in the fight to stop suicide in the construction industry.
