We know Donald Trump is trying to flood the zone with news and chaos to overwhelm us, but the story of the first 100 days of his administration is quite simple.
Trump’s first 100 days were a story of daily, norm-shattering corruption. There are at least 40 different corrupt actions that would’ve taken down any past president.
Here are just a few of them:
At the top of the list is the Trump crypto meme coin. It’s a way for anyone in the world to line his pockets without any disclosures. He launders his income from it through an unregulated Chinese exchange. And it’s not just idle speculation. We know that, in the first minute of trading, an individual, likely Chinese, purchased 6 million coins — sending the price through the roof, and its likely that Donald Trump knows exactly who that person is.
Trump ended the criminal enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, so that his staff can more easily get paid on the side by foreign governments and companies seeking to bribe the Trump Administration.
He made a quid pro quo with Mayor Eric Adams — forcing the DOJ to drop all charges against Adams in exchange for a pledge of loyalty, which he did on live TV.
Trump’s U.S. Attorney for D.C., Ed Martin, is harassing Trump and Musk critics with operation Whirlwind — trolling opponents online and threatening anyone who tries to stop what DOGE is doing.
Trump starts selling meetings with him. Dining with Trump at Mar-a-lago costs $1 million, while CEOs can get one-on-one meetings for $5 million.
The White House lawn was turned into a Tesla showroom to help pump up his buddy’s stocks and sales after the richest man in the world helped buy him the election. It’s an open signal to CEOs and billionaires that those who help him will get favors in return.
Last week, the Trump crypto coin website announced that the top investors would get invited to a private dinner at the White House with Trump and the very top investors would get a private VIP tour. They are literally selling access to the people’s house.
Shortly after that, the Trump family announced a private club in D.C. with an initiation fee of $500,000. It is explicitly advertised as an opportunity for corporations and oligarchs to buy access to Trump’s inner circle. They say the exorbitant price tag and referral requirements are meant to keep the rest of us in the dark.
These are just a small handful of the dozens of mind-blowingly corrupt acts in Trump’s first 100 days.
This corruption is a big part of the reason his approval ratings are cratering. The American people refuse to let him normalize this level of graft.
But lower approval ratings alone solve nothing. It’s why our efforts to mass mobilize people and build an effective opposition party are so important.
The fate of democracy rests in our hands and will require extraordinary tactics and risks from all of us. That is the leadership you deserve from your elected officials.
