In accordance with a [directive from the President](//www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/05/national-fallen-firefighters-memorial-weekend-2025/), Governor Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide this Sunday, May 4, 2025 in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. The [annual service](//weekend.firehero.org/) honoring firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year will take place on Sunday in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

"Every day, firefighters and first responders risk their lives to protect our communities," said Governor Janet Mills. "As we honor firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice, let us renew our commitment to preventing fires and protecting lives."
