PRESS RELEASE

** Asijiki Coalition and Sonke Gender Justice distances itself from a planned event on 12 June 2020
------------------------------------------------------------

** 12 June 2020 · For Immediate Release
------------------------------------------------------------

The Asijiki Coalition for the Decriminalisation of sex work and Sonke Gender Justice would like to distance ourselves from an event flyer titled “People’s March to Mowbray Police Station” that is doing its rounds on social media, to be held on 12 June at 13:00.

While Asijiki and Sonke fully support the call for a full investigation into the death of Robyn Montsumi, we do not have knowledge of the abovementioned event nor were we party to organising the event. Asijiki and Sonke would also like to clarify that both organisations are non-partisan.

We also recognise that two separate complaints have been lodged with the South African Human Rights Commission and the Commission for Gender Equality respectively. We implore the required processes in investigating these complaints be duly followed and that the complaints be considered with full appreciation of the gravity around the circumstances.

Not only have sex workers been marginalised and treated as second class people but there has been a history of systemic human rights violations of sex workers at the hands of police. Policing have also intensified against sex workers during the lockdown period exacerbating the race and class divide.

We echo the sentiments of our sister civil society organisations and call for #JusticeforRobyn.
