Congressman André Carson is among the few members of Congress who consistently stands up for Palestinians’ human rights, and who doesn’t take money from AIPAC.

Right now he’s leading legislation to reinstate humanitarian aid funding to UNRWA, the UN group serving Palestinians. This is especially urgent as Israel’s government continues its two-month blockade, preventing any items from entering Gaza, even as thousands of aid trucks line up outside.  

But now André Carson has a new Democratic primary opponent, who has boasted about meeting with and seeking funding from AIPAC.

During last year’s election cycle, the Islamophobic, anti-Palestinian group spent over $100 million to support lawmakers who’ll keep aiding Israel’s war crimes. Primarily funded by right-wing billionaires, AIPAC is the biggest source of Republican money interfering in Democratic primary elections.

While serving Indiana’s 7th congressional district, Congressman André Carson has gotten 24 bills signed into law and brought back over one billion dollars to his district.

Now he’s holding rallies and workshops in his district to resist Trump’s attacks, and we’re both working with local grassroots groups to share “know your rights” information with our immigrant neighbors.

Congressman Carson is also one of four Muslims now serving in Congress, including me.

He and I fought Trump’s first Muslim ban, and we’ve both led legislation to lift up Muslim Americans, a community that has felt unseen for far too long. As hate crimes and other attacks against Muslim Americans are on the rise, our leadership is needed more than ever.

Our presence in Congress challenges the narrative of who deserves to have a voice in our government. It sends a message to Muslim Americans and other marginalized people: You belong.

Each year we hold Congressional Iftar dinners to celebrate Ramadan at the Capitol with colleagues. And last year André established Congress’ first-ever interfaith space for staff and interns, saying it “encourages interfaith engagement—a key tenant to achieving a more peaceful, understanding community.”

We know that all life is precious, and we will continue fighting for a world where all people can thrive with dignity and peace.
