On this World Press Freedom Day, we are reminded just how dangerous it is to be a journalist today. Last year alone, CPJ documented 124 journalists killed, 361 imprisoned, and 67 missing. As authoritarianism rises in the U.S. and around the world, the work of journalists--especially local and independent voices--has never been more essential.

Whether it's a Syrian journalist finally able to share her story after 15 years in Bashar al-Assad's prisons, Turkish journalists working under house arrest, or a Cuban journalist forced into exile to keep reporting--the resilience of those who speak truth to power is a powerful counter to the forces that seek to silence and suppress.

Today, and every day, we honor, and celebrate these courageous individuals. We invite you to take a moment to reflect on the role reliable, independent journalism plays in your own life, and what's at stake when it's under threat.

Thank you for standing with CPJ in defense of a free press. Those who seek to quash it won't rest, and neither will we. Your support powers our work, and we are deeply grateful.
