Dear Friends --
We won a major victory on Wednesday when the Senate Local Government committee passed Sen. Scott Wiener's SB 79, making it easier to build multifamily housing near transit stops!
Once again, the vote was close. But thanks to a strong grassroots mobilization from YIMBYs across California, SB 79 is now on its way to the Appropriations Committee.
That's not all. Several more of our priority bills passed important hurdles this week:
-
AB 609 (Wicks), exempting infill housing from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), passed the Assembly Housing Committee.
-
AB 595 (Carrillo), creating more affordable homeownership opportunities for working families and communities of color, also passed the Assembly Housing Committee.
-
AB 1061 (Quirk-Silva), targeting the abuse of historic preservation measures, passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Next stop is the Assembly floor.
-
AB 1154 (Carrillo), making it faster and easier to build ADUs and JADUs, passed the Assembly floor on a bipartisan vote of 70-1. This bill is also co-sponsored by Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis.
These victories are made possible by having strong allies in the Legislature and in statewide office. Elections are coming up next year, including for a new governor. If we're going to continue our momentum, we need to make sure to elect more housing leaders in 2026 – and defend pro-housing allies from NIMBY opposition.

The California YIMBY Victory Fund is our political action committee that helps recruit, vet, and support housing champions at the ballot box. That work is particularly urgent when we have an open seat for Governor, as well as many other statewide offices.
There are many open seats every two years due to term limits. Sometimes that means losing longtime housing leaders like Sen. Nancy Skinner, who was termed out last year. It also creates an opportunity to elect new leaders who understand that we have to end the housing shortage in order to make housing affordable in California -- like her successor, Sen. Jesse Arreguín.
The election may be 18 months away. But candidates are already launching their campaigns for Governor, other statewide offices, and the state legislature. We need to build a war chest that can help us ensure YIMBY allies win these important races. Will you step up and help provide the resources we need to elect more housing champions – and pass more bills like AB 609 and SB 79?
Please make a donation to the California YIMBY Victory Fund today!
Thank you so much for stepping up in this urgent moment.
