Last night, the Trump administration proposed a new regulation that would devastate the asylum system—and end asylum as we know it.

The proposed regulation tightens eligibility standards to the point where it will be nearly impossible to qualify. It also allows immigration judges to effectively deny people their day in court by rejecting asylum applications without a hearing.

Asylum has already been weakened by years of sustained attacks. This regulation would be the final blow to our once proud legacy of the United States as a refuge for vulnerable and persecuted populations.
