VOTER ID: A COMMON SENSE STEP FOR ELECTION CONFIDENCE
It can finally become a reality this year
Hi, this is Representative Lucien Daigle from Fort Kent with this week’s Republican Address.
Bonjour!
These days, it can be tough to find common ground on major political issues. But, one area where a strong majority of Americans, across the political spectrum, agree is on the need for a Voter ID law.
Nationwide, 84% of voters support requiring some form of identification to vote.
Here in Maine, 63% of residents support this policy, according to a 2023 poll.
It’s a simple, commonsense measure that helps protect the integrity of our elections.
People use an ID every day—for things like:
- Cashing a check
- Boarding a plane
- Applying for a job
- Receiving unemployment or public benefits
- Buying age-restricted products
- Getting a cellphone
- Opening a bank account
- Renting housing or a hotel room
- Accessing healthcare services
- Getting married
- Obtaining a fishing or hunting license
- Picking up prescriptions
The list goes on.
In short, identification is already a basic part of daily life for most Mainers.
Because of that broad agreement, a grassroots effort collected over 170,000 signatures, more than twice the number required, to put a Voter ID measure on this November’s ballot.
Earlier today, the Legislature’s Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee held public hearings on three proposals to implement Voter ID this year.
These are thoughtful approaches that aim to preserve ballot access while strengthening public trust in our democratic process.
Whether you’re a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or Green, one thing we should all agree on is making it easy to vote and hard to cheat.
Let’s work together to make this long-overdue step a reality.
