“This is not just a North Carolina problem. This is an existential threat to democracy.
—State Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs

Justice Riggs is right. If Republicans succeed in overturning the election she won in North Carolina last November, you can guarantee they’ll try to replicate this playbook across the country.

John, we can’t let that happen. The NDRC is fighting tooth and nail to defend free and fair elections in North Carolina and across the country. Make a contribution of $30 or more to help power this work.

How’d we even get here? Last fall, Justice Riggs — one of the Democracy Defenders we were proud to endorse in 2024 — won re-election to the North Carolina Supreme Court fair and square. Her victory was confirmed by a recount. Then it was confirmed by another recount. The people of North Carolina have spoken and must be heard.

But rather than concede, Republican Jefferson Griffin (the failed challenger in that election) sued to overturn the results by throwing out legally valid ballots. On top of being a sore loser, he’s attacking the sanctity of our elections.

And last month, right-wing North Carolina Supreme Court justices went along with part of his agenda and issued a bombshell ruling to throw out legally cast ballots of overseas voters and target military members from Democratic counties. This decision puts Republicans one step closer to stealing an election.

Like Justice Riggs said: "These voters who are serving our country, they did nothing wrong. They followed every rule in place, including state laws that were passed by a Republican legislature in 2011 and have been used in every election since then without any challenge. We know that these voters did everything that they were told to do. And a court cannot, consistent with the federal constitution, come in and change laws after the election to disenfranchise voters."

While Justice Riggs has petitioned a federal court to step in to protect voters’ constitutional rights, the NDRC is working to expose the GOP’s attack on democracy in North Carolina and across the country.

If you’re outraged by the North Carolina GOP’s attempt to silence voters and reverse the outcome of an election they lost, then please rush a donation of $30 or more right now to help push back against the far right’s anti-democracy agenda.

Thank you,
Team NDRC
