Friend,
Our communities are hurting. And that pain is real. Black people are dying at the hands of police and from COVID-19, after years of environmental racism and poverty. We cannot wait to take action.
During this pandemic and important uprisings, I have not backed down. I continue to speak the truth that some want to ignore.
Our campaign is staying connected to the grassroots movement and translating that into policy that gets at the core issue of structural racism. Transformative change starts in the streets with us. And with every protest and march, you are fueling our policy work in Washington.
I will always have your back, and I will never back down. My primary election is in less than two months. Can you chip in now so we can keep fighting together?
Instead of spending billions on militarizing police, we need to address poverty & inequity. Cities have cut education funding to spend money on police, which is why Black children are in court right now demanding the right to literacy. We need to invest more into communities than into criminalization. Together, we’ve raised over $20,000 to help bail out Black mothers in jail, and over $300,000 for Black-led groups fighting systemic racism.
We need to demand clean water and clean air as human rights. That’s why, in the last COVID-19 relief bill passed by the House, I helped create a $1.5 billion fund to stop water shutoffs during COVID-19. I stand up to corporate polluters that profit off of poisoning our communities, taking leadership from local environmental justice activists who help me shape policy.
We need to protect the most vulnerable members of society. That’s why my first bill passed in Congress, the Payee Fraud Prevention Act, puts an end to fraudulent scams targeting vulnerable retirees and their pensions. We’re fighting in Congress for direct, monthly payments for everyone right now. And in the past few months, we’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars for local community-based organizations providing food and other essential items to residents of Michigan’s 13th district. We’ve also returned over $1 million back to Michigan’s 13th district—the third poorest district in the country—in the form of Social Security benefits, veteran benefits, debt reduction, and other critical services.
We need racial equity in our insurance and lending practices. That’s why I passed legislation prohibiting medically necessary debt from showing up on credit reports, and introduced two bills to stop the auto insurance industry from discriminating against people based on non-driving factors like credit score and zip code.
We need accountability in government. That’s why I was one of the first members of Congress to take on Donald Trump and demand accountability for his lawless and unconstitutional actions. And I’m one of the few members of Congress who refuses to take corporate PAC money.
I represent the 3rd poorest congressional district in the country. We are a strong community, however, we have been denied the opportunity to thrive. We’ve been left behind, so I ran to give our district a voice. And with every bill I introduce and every vote I cast, I’m focused on dismantling the structural racism at the root of so many of our problems.
Together, we must reimagine what being safe in community means and demand that our elected leaders listen and act.
Help me continue to speak truth to power and fight for our communities. With your help, I can keep standing up to the racist billionaire bullies who want to continue to oppress us. If you can, pitch in to my re-election campaign today.
