Dear Supporter
When we think about the UK's transition to net zero, we tend to picture electric cars, bike lanes, or zero emission buses. What we don't often picture is a homecare worker, in an ageing petrol car, rushing between appointments in a rural community.
Yet social care is one of the most transport-reliant sectors in the country — and also one of the most overlooked in climate and transport policy. That needs to change. If we are to reach net zero in a way that is fair and inclusive, we need to listen to homecare workers and support them to shift to greener, cheaper transport.
For our new report, backed by UNISON, the union for social care staff, we surveyed care workers about their transport needs, to find real solutions.

** The reality is stark
------------------------------------------------------------
Over 70 per cent of homecare workers rely on private cars to travel between their clients' homes, providing vital care. Many drive over 600 miles a month. These essential workers are mostly low-paid, and their cars are often old, with high emissions and running costs.
Meanwhile, public transport is often undependable or non-existent, particularly in semi-rural areas. This leaves carers stuck with costly, carbon-heavy travel that they can neither afford nor escape.
** But there are solutions
------------------------------------------------------------
Our report highlights real, practical solutions, including:
* Support for homecare workers to buy or lease electric cars
* Changing the way care staff are assigned to clients, to reduce the distance travelled
* Free or subsidised e-bikes
* Improvements to public transport, and free or cheap fares for homecare workers
* Car clubs and car sharing schemes
Each of these solutions is supported by the voices of care workers themselves. Our survey of over 1,600 UNISON members, and our detailed focus-group discussions, revealed a workforce under strain, spending over £100 a month on fuel, facing limited transport choices, and dealing with unrealistic schedules. One participant summed it up:
"Carers are an amazing workforce, but the system needs to value us more."
We'd love to know what you think of our report ([link removed]) , especially if you're a care worker, or if you receive care yourself - please just reply to this email.
** The Big Give: we did it!
------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, an enormous thank you to everyone who donated to our Big Give campaign. We did it! Thanks to almost 300 donors, whose donations were doubled by match funding, we reached our target of £20,000!
This is such a boost, and will make our campaigns this year much better and much stronger.
Stephen Thanks and best wishes
