Secretary Benson statement on House introduction of Michigan Election Security Act

"Today, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson issued the following statement on the introduction of the Michigan Election Security Act ("House Bills 4461 – 4463) "as part of the Security, Accountability, and Nonintervention in Elections (SANE) Plan:"

“Earlier this year, I stood with Rep. Wooden and other lawmakers in favor of a new Michigan Election Security Act [ [link removed] ] to protect the rights of Michigan citizens to cast a ballot, improve current laws, and codify existing processes. Today, I’m grateful to these legislative leaders for delivering strong and sensible solutions to make Michigan’s elections even more secure.

“The Michigan Election Security Act, introduced today in the Michigan House, includes several important provisions that will strengthen our ability to keep our voter rolls up to date, help election officials more effectively identify and remove ineligible voter registrations, and provide additional tools to make sure eligible voters can easily register and cast their ballot.

“The proposed legislation will legally require secretaries of state to conduct regular reviews to compare Michigan motor vehicle records with voting records in the state’s Qualified Voter File. We started this new, ongoing process after the 2024 General Election [ [link removed] ], confirming that credible cases of noncitizens casting a ballot in Michigan are extremely rare.

“This is the kind of leadership we need for Michigan – not heavy handed, failed policies like the federal SAVE Act [ [link removed] ] that have blocked tens of thousands of eligible voters from casting their ballot in states like Arizona and Kansas.

“I look forward to working with lawmakers on reasonable, data-driven plans to improve election security while ensuring that every eligible citizen can always make their voice heard.”
