John --
I never thought I'd see the day when the president of the United States would turn our nation's military against the American people.
Outraged is an understatement. Watching tear gas and rubber bullets violently disperse peaceful protestors for the sake of an opportunistic photoshoot is an unbelievable disregard for our hard-won Constitutional freedoms.
Black Americans have persevered despite over 400 years of unspeakable injustices. So when communities all across the nation come together to demand better for themselves and their neighbors, it is the responsibility of lawmakers to listen and create change.
The House's Justice in Policing Act of 2020 is nothing radical -- but it's the boldest action taken on law enforcement reform in decades. It puts a stop to unfair and often deadly racial profiling, and ensures law enforcement is properly trained to protect the people they are sworn to serve. It will make body cameras mandatory, and ban both the horrific chokeholds and limit military-grade equipment that leads to so many innocent Black lives lost.

We cannot allow innocent Americans like George Floyd to die in vain. Their loss must be a rallying cry to prevent these atrocities from ever happening again. We should be lifting up the voices of fed-up citizens who simply want to live without fear of dying at the hands of the police -- not using tanks, machine guns, and an unnecessary military presence to try and silence them.
Trump was always a threat to our democracy. But I never thought I'd live to see the day he'd retaliate against the American people with such heartless, brutal force. The president's words and actions are dangerous and cannot be tolerated. We must continue raising our voices and working together to secure the justice that the Black community deserves.
Thank you for using your voice,
Dwight
