How can journalists go beyond the headlines to show what’s at stake? Jen Psaki shares her approach in the next episode of “The Poynter Report Podcast.”
On Monday, former White House press secretary and current MSNBC host Jen Psaki joins Tom Jones, senior media writer at Poynter, to talk about her new prime-time show, “The Briefing with Jen Psaki.” Psaki explains why she’s focused on giving viewers more than the latest developments, and why helping audiences connect the dots has never been more important.
"When I run into people on the train or at the grocery store,” she says in the podcast, “oftentimes their questions are like, 'What's happening with the IRS?' Or, 'What's going on with this Signalgate thing? And how does it affect me?'"
Psaki draws from her experience in government and national media to offer a unique perspective on how journalists and news organizations can teach people "something they didn't know" — adding crucial context to help audiences understand the bigger picture.
“Things that may sound like little minute details … help people understand, I hope what’s happening and why it is so out of the norm.”
“The Briefing with Jen Psaki” airs Tuesday through Friday at 9 p.m. Eastern on MSNBC, starting May 6.
Hosted by respected journalist Tom Jones, Poynter’s senior media writer, “The Poynter Report Podcast” delivers smart, 20-minute episodes every other week, featuring conversations with leading media voices such as NBC News’ Steve Kornacki, The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch, and now Jen Psaki.
At the Poynter Institute, we are committed to journalism, truth and democracy — and our podcast offers a front-row seat to the conversations shaping the future of media.
