Status-quo politicians and their corporate sponsors like us to believe they hold all the power. But, I’m going to let you in on a pretty big open secret about this country: They don’t. You and I have the power to shape our society, John, we just have to exercise it.

We’re seeing this now with the protests in the streets sparked by the murder of George Floyd and fueled by centuries of systemic racism. After protestors made it clear they’re not backing down, municipalities across the country are reconsidering how they fund and train their law enforcement officers. In Congress we’re seeing a bill to end qualified immunity, and they’re holding hearings on police reform.

We’ve seen how our power can affect change here in Arizona, too. In 2016 in Flagstaff, I led the successful citizen ballot initiative responsible for our minimum wage increases, which will hit $15.50 by 2022.

Dark Money groups, funded in part by the Kochs, launched a repeal effort against this wage increase. But we fought back and won. Again. They had the money. But we had the power of The People.
