Democrats on the move Calendar Democrats on the move... Mobilize the voters! June 11, 2020 The brutal killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis has pricked our collective conscience to stand up and speak out for racial equality. Not just in the major cities, but in the quiet suburbs, morally conscientious people are gathering to peacefully demonstrate for this vital cause. Last week hundreds of local residents protested in Folsom, El Dorado Hills, and Roseville . This is not just a moment in our history. It is a movement, and it’s gaining momentum. More protests are planned with the expectation of ever-increasing participation. Now is the time to protest, organize and mobilize voters. Sunrise to Justice Friday, June 12, 8 - 10am As the sun rises on Friday, June 12th, we will gather with our art projects and displays and once again show our support for George Floyd and all those whose color led them to be victims of police brutality and/or vigilantism. This peaceful gathering will also allow for healing as our emotions have been building over these many days. It is also a celebration, for in Placerville, we have a Police Department that is committed to working with and being part of the community, all of our community. This celebration is also symbolic to show that we are working together. We are moving from awareness to action, from signs to conversations, from tragedy to reform. We are thankful to work with the Placerville Police Department and recognize their support for our community. Our protest is about injustice and racial inequality, it is about police brutality and problems with policing. It is not a protest against our PD. We will be meeting with the Placerville PD, the City Manager, and elected officials and begin the dialog that moves us all forward. We love our community. We are part of our community. We want to see our community continue to thrive and grow. Placerville community rallies and protests with support of local police chief.. check out video Rally at Placerville Courthouse Friday, June 12th 5-6:30 p.m. Placerville Courthouse Social Distancing: Please wear a mask to promote safety for all to participate What to Bring: Signs, water, sunscreen, snacks and all the energy you have to send a loud, clear message that Black Lives Matter! Note: if you’d like to participate in person, but not in the physical rally, drive your car down Main St. and HONK for Support! Go around the block and Repeat! Last week several folks did this and it was great! (see "Honk for Justice" below) Please do not post on public FaceBook pages, but please share widely! A HONK says, “I share your concern! I’m with you! Thank you for standing up for a positive change.” One thing holding some people back from joining the protests is a lingering and legitimate concern about COVID-19. Some of us are still sheltering in place, though our hearts are with the protesters. There is an answer to this dilemma: Participate as a DRIVE-BY HONKER! You can remain in your car and simply drive up and down the streets where protesters are gathered and HONK in support of their cause. This might sound silly, but it has a HUGE IMPACT. Honking encourages the protesters who have put themselves out there for a good cause. A HONK says, “I share your concern! I’m with you! Thank you for standing up for a positive change.” There’s nothing worse for activists who are trying to rouse social consciousness than being met with blank stares and dead silence from passers-by who are clueless or indifferent. That is especially disheartening when critics of the protest shout insults or obscenities out their car windows. The motorists who HONK IN SUPPORT encourage and embolden the protesters to carry on. If you support EQUAL JUSTICE FOR ALL but are unable to participate in a protest for any reason—whether it be due to a physical disability or a need to maintain social distancing—you can still be part of the event: Just HONK in support of the protesters from the comfort and safety of your car. This works well on public streets such as East Bidwell in Folsom, El Dorado Hills Blvd. and Latrobe in EDH, and Douglas Avenue in Roseville. Protesters can encourage this form of support by holding signs that say, “HONK for. . .” For example, “HONK for Equal Justice for All”; “HONK for racial equality”; “HONK for Black Lives Matter”; “HONK for Peace and Justice.” “HONK for George Floyd”; “HONK to end Police Brutality.” “HONK for . . . [whatever].” Whatever message you want to convey, preface it with “HONK for. . . “ Thank you for being part of this movement. We’ll see you at the next protest. Or we’ll HEAR you there when you HONK. “If we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics. We have to do both.” ...
