John, Being mayor of a major city - in my case, Houston - isn’t an easy job. You are constantly in the spotlight – so every move you make is picked apart. And when you are an openly LGBTQ mayor, it certainly doesn’t become any easier. There’s homophobia, double standards and the knowledge that you are a role model for young LGBTQ people. I was the first openly LGBTQ mayor of a major American city, which added some pressure as well. Running for public office is tough, and it takes a bit extra to run when you are LGBTQ. But having Victory Institute on my side certainly helped. I've recorded a short video below detailing how Victory Institute stands with our LGBTQ elected officials and how our programs guide them through the various stages of their careers. Give it a listen: Remember: being an openly LGBTQ candidate, elected official or leader isn’t easy. But thanks to our supporters, they will never have to do it alone. We're so excited to have you on the team. Mayor Annise Parker President & CEO, Victory Institute
