NYC Health + Hospitals Chronicles Lessons Learned During COVID-19 In New
Series From Health Affairs
NYC Health + Hospitals, America's largest public health care system,
has weathered large-scale emergencies such as 9/11, Hurricane Sandy, and
the 2014 Ebola outbreak, but frontline health care providers quickly
realized they were facing an unparalleled threat with COVID-19.
Critically ill patients overwhelmed New York City hospitals as the
crisis escalated. At the same time, COVID-19 became an unlikely catalyst
for bringing telehealth and other new initiatives
to
scale. NYC Health + Hospitals transformed each of its hospitals into
large ICUs
and
trained more than 9,000 nurses
in
just two months to meet the extraordinary demand for patient care. A
COVID-19 clinician hotline connected more than 90,000 New Yorkers
with
accurate and reliable information at a time when 911, EMS, and emergency
departments were inundated.
Now that hospitals are bracing for a second wave of COVID-19 infections,
many are determined to do things differently.
In an exclusive two-part series from Health Affairs, top health care
executives and physicians from NYC Health + Hospitals chronicle their
experiences
and
offer guidance for other health systems responding to the pandemic.
Four journal articles are now available ahead of print, along with a new
blog post and podcast interview.
