Each year, National Assistive Technology (AT) Awareness Day recognizes the transformative role of assistive technology in enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and older adults. AT includes a broad range of tools from screen readers to communication software that helps enable individuals to participate fully in education, employment, and community activities.
In Texas, numerous organizations and programs provide access to assistive technology:
- Texas Technology Access Program (TTAP): TTAP offers device demonstrations, short-term loans, and training to help Texans explore and acquire the AT solutions best suited to their specific needs.
- Texas Education Agency (TEA): TEA provides guidance on integrating assistive technology into educational settings, ensuring students with disabilities have the tools necessary for academic success. Find more information on the TEA website.
- Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Division: TWC’s VR Division helps individuals with disabilities access AT to support their employment goals. Individuals can get started through the Start My VR referral form or by contacting a local VR office.
