Worker Power for Abolition NOW:
Abolitionist Reflections on May Day 2025

Thursday is International Workers’ Day, representing an opportunity for Leftists and everyday people internationally to come together and to recommit and deepen working-class struggle for liberation. In honor of May Day, Critical Resistance (CR) will join everyday people from across the country in solidarity as we march in resistance to authoritarianism and for collective liberation.

In this past period, we have witnessed Trump and his MAGA aligned forces fumbling through yo-yoing the introduction and pull back of tariffs that threaten to send the US economy into a recession. Elon Musk and his "techno-fief lord" aspirational team have torn at the social safety net all while poverty is being criminalized through the resurgence of tough on crime legislation in response to economic anxiety.

Deportations are accelerating with Trump just releasing an Executive Order targeting sanctuary cities, and resistance is being met with harsh retribution. This is especially the case with the struggle in solidarity with Palestine - which remains devastatingly under siege by Israel. Universities and student organizers in particular are being targeted and facing intense repression including FBI targeting and deportation.

Even as ICE moves to open new cages to increase capacity, everyday people are fighting back across the country, defending freedom fighters and their communities. We are figuring out ways of slowing down detention centers - like in New Jersey or in Dublin, California.

CR has been hard at work as a part of these and many other fights. Our prison closure campaign is part of the effort to stop a new detention facility at FCI Dublin from replacing the former federal facility that was notorious for sexually assaulting the people imprisoned there. We’re forging ahead in our fight to end ICE contracts in New York state. This past month, we have been fighting to stop Portland police bureau from getting the lion’s share of the Portland budget while most other city services are being cut. In Atlanta, we’re part of the struggle to end GILEE as part of shrinking the power of policing and the exchange of resources, tools and tactics shared to repress people in the US and Palestine.

We’re aiming to put resources back toward the working class - through our efforts with the PDX budget but also through rematriation of land - such as the work our new Central Appalachia chapter is doing in Kentucky or the work our prison closure campaign in California is doing with Black reparations and indigenous groups.

We at CR understand that authoritarianism requires the prison industrial complex (PIC) as a means of social control and curtailing working class resistance. We know that by remaining steadfast in our fight to abolish the PIC, we are honoring the legacy of resistance and engaging in a key part of the freedom struggle.

Join CR chapters in the streets this Thursday (and Saturday if you're in the Pacific Northwest) this May Day (info for Oakland, Los Angeles and Portland below in our announcements). We look forward to being alongside you in struggle until we win.

Onward,
-Critical Resistance
