Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel joined Mahoning County education and community leaders for a groundbreaking ceremony, celebrating the beginning of construction on an all-new Health and Wellness Center at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.

(CANFIELD, Ohio)—Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel took part in a groundbreaking ceremony today to celebrate the beginning of construction on an all-new Health and Wellness Center at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC).

Supported in part by over $5 million in state funding through the Appalachian Community Innovation Centers Grant Program [ [link removed] ], the new MCCTC Health and Wellness Center will  increase access to career training opportunities for students, while also serving as a destination for healthcare for Mahoning County residents.

“Under Governor DeWine’s leadership, we have so many opportunities coming to us right now in Ohio – not only in terms of jobs but also new opportunities for students to refine their skills through new and improved career technical centers,” said Lt. Governor Tressel. “This particular facility is so exciting because, in addition to opening up doors for more students to find their passion, it also doubles as a healthcare resource, from which the entire community can benefit.”

The new, 13,000-square-foot center will be located on the grounds of MCCTC. The facility will include several state-of-the-art labs to provide training in a variety of in-demand fields, including robotics and automation systems, electrical systems, and welding.

Notably, this center will also include a health services training lab, where students can work to develop their skills for future careers as nurses, paramedics, behavioral health professionals, and more. The center aims to help address the critical need for healthcare professionals in the Mahoning Valley.

The new, 13,000-square-foot center will be located on the grounds of MCCTC. It is scheduled to open in fall of 2026.

The Health and Wellness Center will double as a school-based health center. It will provide access to health services – not only for students, but also for families and the broader community. When completed, the center is expected to serve more than 6,500 people each year, providing comprehensive medical and mental health services through strategic partnerships with Mercy Health and Cadence Care Network.

The DeWine-Tressel Administration continues to place a priority on giving students and all residents in Ohio the tools to stay healthy so they can reach their full potential. One of those tools has been school-based health facilities. The state has continued to invest in bringing more healthcare resources to Appalachia [ [link removed] ] in recent years.

The MCCTC Health and Wellness Center is scheduled for completion in August 2026.

The new facility comes as the demand for career technical education in Ohio continues to increase. Over the past four years, the state has seen a 10% growth in the number of students participating in career tech – that’s over 13,000 more students than in 2021.

Today’s groundbreaking represents another milestone in the DeWine-Tressel Administration’s ongoing efforts to ensure that all Ohio students have access to high-quality, hands-on education that prepares them for success in today’s workforce.

“We’re giving more students the opportunity to figure out what they want to do in life; what they are passionate about,” said Lt. Governor Tressel. “As we continue to travel around the state to discuss the workforce strengths and needs of various regions, our next step will be to make sure our education and business communities are aligned to help our students turn their passion into a meaningful career.”
