Those tasks are essential to liberty and justice in America, and they have all been hallmarks of CREW’s work since its founding over 20 years ago.

I know that often, defending our democracy feels like an uphill battle. We’re facing unprecedented challenges, moving from crisis to crisis with a presidential administration that seems committed to operating in secrecy and without regard for the rule of law.

Our democracy is in crisis, plain and simple.

CREW has a track record of taking on big fights and winning—it was responsible for enforcing the disqualification of an oathbreaking insurrectionist from office, for a record-breaking dark money fine, for setting precedent for government transparency in the courts and for complaints that led to findings that political groups and administration officials violated the law.

And even in these perilous times, CREW is not backing down, because it has the expertise needed to defend our democracy against these unprecedented threats—which is why I’m so proud to be part of the team. Here are some of those ongoing fights:

The very day that Trump was inaugurated, CREW sued the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, for operating unlawfully.

CREW also sued DOGE multiple times over transparency issues, and we’ve had some encouraging early victories in that case, with a judge ordering DOGE to comply with records requests and granting discovery.

CREW has also sued to block Trump's plan to make it easier to fire government workers, sued the CDC for violating transparency laws amidst the measles outbreak and sued the Trump administration for hiding federal spending information from the public.

At the same time as CREW is pursuing accountability in the courts, it’s also pursuing public accountability by calling out Trump for continuing to profit from the presidency, developing new foreign business entanglements and coming ever closer to defying court orders.

It’s not just Trump we are up against in the fight to expose corruption and rebuild trust in our democracy.

Having had the privilege of serving in Congress for a decade, and seeing today’s congressional failure to carry out their Constitutional responsibilities, this is NOT the time to put your head in the sand. Everyone is asking, “what can I do?”

It is time to support those ever vigilant and talented lawyers who are on the front lines, working 24/7, despite threats, to preserve American values and our democracy.

CREW has testified in front of Congress, endorsed reforms proposed by legislators on both sides of the aisle, worked to beat back the influence of unchecked money in politics and called out members of Congress of both parties for their stock trading and other ethics scandals.

I am so proud of the team we have built and I am thankful to our staff who are making an impact. It is hard to imagine a time that CREW has been more needed or relevant in our over 20 year history.
