BREAKING NEWS: Alarming new data on abortion trends will be key focus at the upcoming March for Life

"Since the law took effect in 2019, there’s been approximately 51,000 abortions, a far cry from the misleading promise that abortion in Ireland would be ‘safe, legal and rare’” - Mulroy

In a written reply from the HSE, released earlier today, to a parliamentary question from Carol Nolan TD, the HSE on behalf of the Minister for Health revealed that in 2024, GPs claimed reimbursements for a total of 10,441 abortions. This figure does not include the abortions carried out in Irish hospitals.

Commenting on the HSE reply to Deputy Nolan, Eilís Mulroy of the Pro Life Campaign said: “Based on today’s very disturbing figures, it indicates yet another marked increase in abortions on the previous year, and that’s without including the number of abortions that occurred in hospital settings during the same one year period.

“These alarming abortion projections showing another dramatic year-on-year increase in abortions since the law changed demands an immediate government response. Right now, all the evidence points to women not being informed as a matter of course prior to abortions about the range of practical supports available should the woman decide to continue the pregnancy. The absolute refusal of the government to address this issue over the past six years is an outrage and it’s going to be a key focus at next Monday’s March for Life in Dublin. We are greatly encouraged that positive change can happen in the new Dáil, with the increase in the number of pro-life TDs and Senators elected recently.

“There can be no room for revisionism or trying to explain away the latest abortion figures by those in power. The figures speak for themselves, there has been a massive in abortions, leading to a massive loss of life and untold suffering for the many women who go on to regret their abortions. We are strongly encouraging people to attend the march this Bank Holiday Monday to send a strong message to the government about the need for change, and for voices other than those that promote abortion to be brought to the heart of the decision making process, to start focussing on alternatives.”

This latest data brings the total number of abortions in Ireland up to over 50,000 since the abortion law came into effect in 2019.

The same data also shows that in January and February of this year alone there were claims by GPs in these months for 1,742. The annual notifications report for 2023 for the same months showed there were 1,561 abortion notifications. This difference shows an increase of 181, which indicates that yet again the trend is towards yet another increase in the total abortion rate by the end of 2025.

The number of Irish abortions for 2018 stood at 2,879, a stark contrast to what the latest figures show.
