** See you at Civic Center Plaza for May Day (Thursday, May 1st)
------------------------------------------------------------

Indivisible SF will have a contingent and table at the May 1st Rally and March ([link removed]) . This PEACEFUL rally and march starts at Civic Center Plaza at 4 PM, where we’ll hear from unions and community organizers.

Indivisible SF will have a table at the rally, by one of the lines of trees at Civic Center, where we will be handing out flyers and raising awareness and money for our friends at SF Pride ([link removed]) .

After the rally, around 5 PM, we will march via Market Street to 630 Sansome (the ICE Building). We will be marching out from Civic Center Plaza to Grove St, going from Grove to Market St., then turning on Sansome St.

At the endpoint of the march, there will be a short program showing our power in protecting our immigrant community. Then we will disperse, which is expected around 7 PM.

We expect limited bathroom access at this event. Bathrooms are available at the Main Library at Civic Center. The only public restroom that we are aware of near the endpoint of the march is Montgomery BART. Bring water and snacks as this will be a long event.

There will be photography from the media, Pro Bono Photo, and individuals at this event. You may be photographed without your express consent. This march is expected to be very peaceful with no agitation, but if you feel like you cannot tolerate any risk of being identified or arrested, please avoid the area. If you do not want to be present at the ICE building at the endpoint of the march, please leave the contingent during the march, no later than Montgomery BART.

Do you want to march with us? Our contingent will assemble at 3:30 PM on the south (Grove) side of Civic Center Plaza in front of Bill Graham Auditorium. Sign up for our contingent ([link removed]) on our Google form, then join us at 3:30 PM (half an hour before the rally) at that location.

To stay up-to-date before and during the event, please download and install Signal. Registered contingent participants will be added to our Signal group via the phone number or username you provide.

Want to help with setup or teardown? If you are on our Slack workspace, join #direct_action and let us know you are ready to help. Reply back to this email if you are not on our Slack and want to join.

Want to spread the word? Download, print, and post our flyers wherever you can!

** Save Andry Hernández Romero: Tell our Senators to go to El Salvador and speak up!
------------------------------------------------------------
Andry Hernández Romero is a gay makeup artist who was applying for asylum in California after fleeing persecution in Venezuela for his sexuality and political views. His attorney says he followed the rules and did everything right.

When he arrived, he was detained at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in California. He was scheduled for an asylum hearing on March 13. But when the hearing came, he didn’t appear. He had already been disappeared to CECOT, El Salvador’s detention facility, without his lawyers knowing. A corrupt former cop (now ICE agent) wrongly identified him as a gang member and had him disappeared without any due process. He is not alone. Hundreds of other migrants have been wrongfully sent to CECOT with no hearing, no credible criminal accusation, no due process at all.

Our Senators must go to El Salvador and demand to speak to Andry Hernández Romero, and help his lawyers bring him back. If the Trump administration can do this to him, they can do it to anyone—they’ve already detained green card holders ([link removed]) and citizens ([link removed]) .

Tell your Senators: ([link removed]) go to El Salvador and speak up for Andry Hernández Romero!

** Don’t let it be legal: NO on Trump’s Rescission Package cutting USAID, NPR, and PBS
------------------------------------------------------------
The White House was going to ask for a rescission package ([link removed]) which would make the DOGE cuts to USAID legal and was also asking for cuts to NPR and PBS ([link removed]) .

The original request was supposed to be made on Monday, April 28. However, over the weekend, the White House said they may be delaying the request ([link removed]) for the Rescission Package.

The purpose of the rescission package is to eliminate funding that Congress has already approved. It would make Trump’s dismantling of USAID legal, and would invalidate lawsuits against the staff layoffs at USAID.

Simple majorities in both Houses are needed for the bill to pass, so if and when it arrives in Congress, it will be hard to stop. But our Members of Congress must still vote NO and use their procedural power to stop this bill.

Tell our Members of Congress: ([link removed]) NO on the Rescission package!

Demand a People’s Budget: Ask Mayor Lurie and your Supervisors to prioritize the people and tax Airbnb!
------------------------------------------------------------
A budget is a moral document and an expression of values. We know that all people, no matter where they live, what they look like, or who they love, deserve safety and well-being.

Our city’s next budget is currently being crafted. But contrary to our values, our communities are on the chopping block. Year after year, we see more and more cuts to needed services while the budget for the police gets more and more bloated—especially with massive overtime spending ([link removed]) . The Board of Supervisors published an audit of police overtime ([link removed]) last year, but they have yet to take action.

We know over-spending on police does not keep us safer. Safety comes from violence prevention, after-school programs, mental health services, community networks, and more.

Mayor Lurie tells us there's a budget deficit. But in wealthy San Francisco, there's plenty of money to go around—but only if wealthy corporations pay their fair share. Unfortunately, Airbnb is suing the city to avoid paying what it owes in taxes ([link removed]) .

Now is the time for us to call the Mayor and your Supervisor to make sure they know what we stand for. We want a city where our budget protects the freedom and future thriving of all our people and families. Email the Board of Supervisors to oppose $90 million of additional police overtime. Email the CEO of Airbnb who is refusing to be a good neighbor and pay what they owe in taxes.

Preparing for Trump Tariffs
------------------------------------------------------------
The Trump Tariffs are already causing damage, with as shipments in American ports beginning to dry up ([link removed]) . This will cause higher costs and scarcer goods, with ripple effects comparable to the early-pandemic supply chain shocks of 2020.

There’s a saying that got popularized during the 20th century’s Great Depression:

Use it up.
Wear it out.
Make it do,
or do without.

Until Trump (or the next Democratic president) rescinds the destructive Trump Tariff policy, we’ll need to cut back on what we buy. Part of that will be cutting back on what we waste. We’ve prepared some recommendations for how you and your family can prepare for and endure the coming period of scarcity.

** Help the Roxie Theater buy their building!
------------------------------------------------------------
We’ve happily worked with the Roxie Theater in the Mission on a couple of fronts this year. Last month, the Roxie hosted the showings of “Democracy Noir” that raised money for us. We also rent our current meeting space, 518 Valencia, from them.

Even beyond our own benefit, the Roxie has been a cultural institution in the Mission for roughly a hundred years, having opened under its current name in 1934 ([link removed]) , and with antecedents going back a bit farther.

Now the Roxie is working to raise $7 million to buy the building it occupies and make various improvements and investments in future operations. As of yesterday, the campaign has a little over $1 million left ([link removed]) to go.

You can help either by making a one-time gift or becoming a monthly donor to the Roxie. Learn more at Forever Roxie ([link removed]) .
