Urge government to act before the UN talks

View in browser

Dear John,

This year world leaders will visit the iconic Amazon rainforest for the UN climate talks.

The Amazon holds the richest diversity of life in the world. Millions of people rely on it for their livelihoods. And it protects us all from climate breakdown. But like many of the world’s forests, it’s vanishing fast – driven by land grabbing and destruction hidden in the supply chains of greedy companies.

Ahead of the UN talks, we need the UK government to commit to action to hold all UK companies involved to account. Will you sign our petition to urge them to act?

I'LL SIGN THE PETITION

I'm emailing you today because it’s the AGM of Unilever – makers of everything from Magnum ice creams to Dove soap.

For the past 3 years we’ve attended the AGM to demand action. Because AAL – a company responsible for horrific human rights abuses, environmental damage and land grabbing in Sulawesi, Indonesia – produces palm oil that makes its way into some of Unilever’s products.

We’re there again today to demand answers from its CEO and board on behalf of affected communities. But after 3 years of failing to resolve issues on the ground, it’s clear that companies like Unilever can’t be relied on to police themselves. We need a new law to hold them to account.

Thank you so much to everyone who gave to our Big Give challenge over the past few days. Amazingly you helped us reach our £220,000 target, which will supercharge this campaign.

Now’s your latest chance to make a difference – by signing our petition and heaping the pressure on the government to establish the new law. It’s time companies were held to account for harm in their supply chains.

I'LL SIGN THE PETITION

Best wishes,

Clare

PS The UK government likes to claim it shows leadership at the UN climate talks, and protecting forests will be high on the agenda. Which is why we want to persuade it to make a commitment that they can talk about in Brazil. So please sign our petition today.
