The Results Are In: How COVID-19 Has Impacted CHBA BC Members
CHBA BC
In early-May, CHBA BC went out with a provincial survey asking its members to provide feedback and data on the economic impacts of COVID-19 upon their businesses. The survey had over 150 respondents, representing all eight locals, and provided detailed information to be presented to the provincial government on the best supporting policies for economic recovery of the residential construction industry.

The following report includes a detailed analysis of our respondent data, along with key takeaways for the provincial government and you, our members.

Don't get shocked by changes. Have your say on the Electrical Code
CHBA BC
We need your help! CHBA National needs volunteers with residential electrical installation experience to join a team to review proposed changes to the Canadian Electrical Code. Volunteers do not need to be members of CHBA.

Understanding cost and other impacts on proposed changes is powerful information when committees often consider only the safety benefits. On a periodic basis (5 to 6 times a year), CHBA will provide participants with short information briefs and ask focused questions regarding changes to the Canadian Electrical Code and their potential impact. Click on the link for more details: http://www.multibriefs.com/briefs/CHBABC/CodeBuilderGroupInvitation.pdf.

If you have this expertise and want to join the team, please email [email protected].

Not for you? Pass the invite to your electricians or electrical contractors.

Advocacy Update

BC Budget: CHBA BC is presenting to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services on June 16. This is an opportunity to highlight CHBA BC’s specific COVID-19 economic recovery policies to the government, in addition to other long term recommendations.

Sick Days: CHBA BC signed on to a joint construction industry letter regarding sick days. We know this issue is top of mind for members, and this should be a federal responsibility to address. To view the letter and recommendations, click here.

Land Owner Transparency Registry: Due to the delayed Legislature sitting, the Registry launch is delayed to Fall 2020. You can learn more about the registry here.

WorkSafeBC Updates

Schedule 1 Changes: The Policy, Regulation and Research Division released a discussion paper on adding diseases caused by communicable viral pathogens, including COVID-19, to Schedule 1 of the Workers Compensation Act with options and draft amendments to stakeholders for comment. CHBA BC is participating in this consultation. Members are welcome to also provide comments by June 12, and can learn more at this link.

Premiums: On June 8, WorkSafeBC announced it is deferring quarterly premium payments for an additional quarter, without penalty or interest. Rate consultations and preliminary rates for 2021 will also be delayed until the Fall of this year. You can learn more about these announcements here.

CHBA National
The CHBA is piloting the expansion of our Net Zero Energy Home Labelling program to existing homes with modified requirements, new training, and tools for renovators. We’re calling for applications from renovators who have completed or are completing a deep energy renovation to validate this work, and be part of the first group of homes labelled as Net Zero/Ready for Renovations. As a valued Service Organization, we wanted to clearly communicate how this impacts you.

All of the Pilot information is also posted on our new webpage www.NetZeroRenos.com.

For more information on the project, timeline, and requirements please contact Marie Hanchet at [email protected].

Genworth Steps In To Fill CMHC Void
CHBA National
After CMHC’s announcement on June 4 to change its underwriting rules, Canada’s other insured-mortgage providers, Genworth Canada (long-time CHBA Alliance Network partner) and Canada Guaranty, confirmed neither would be following CMHC’s lead. This is good news and should avoid disruption in the market as the business CMHC is abandoning should simply go to these other insurers. Regarding CMHC’s ill-advised changes, CHBA has responded accordingly with both a media release and formal communications with the Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for CMHC, as well as other government officials. CHBA emphasized that the changes are ill-timed and reflect an ongoing lack of support for homeownership by the country’s national housing agency, running contrary to its mandate and the personal and financial goals of Canadians. CHBA continues to focus on working with the federal government to find policy solutions that will bolster economic recovery through residential construction, and signal federal support for homeownership.
