3RD ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE FEST
Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke hosted the 3rd Annual Food Drive Fest at the State Capitol, where state employees, legislators, and community members came together to support the Hawai’i Foodbank. Representative Shimizu attended the event, which raised enough donations to provide over 4,000 meals. The event highlighted the ongoing commitment of state employees to help families facing food insecurity across the islands.
SUPPORT FOR SB1300
On April 23, 2025, Representative Reyes Oda met with students from Castle High School who advocated for SB1300. SB1300 aims to expand free school meal coverage to students who currently qualify for reduced-price lunches. Representative Reyes Oda believes this is an incredibly important bill that will benefit the wellness and education of students across the State.
Representative Matsumoto is proud to support SB1300, ensuring free school meals for all keiki in Hawaii. No child should have to learn on an empty stomach. This bill is about equity, health, and giving every keiki the foundation they need to succeed.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Representative Shimizu joined fellow lawmakers at the Capitol for the annual donation to YWCA Oʻahu’s ‘Dress for Success’ program, which supports women reentering the workforce while overcoming challenges like poverty, homelessness, and incarceration. This year’s clothing drive was organized by the offices of Representative Gregg Takayama and Senator Joy San Buenaventura. Over ninety bags of professional attire were collected thanks to generous donations from legislators, staff, and community members.
SAY NO TO GAMBLING

Representative Shimizu voted "NO" to SCR121, which requests the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism to convene a tourism and gaming working group.

The Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism, which would be tasked to lead this working group already did a 74-page analysis with the conclusion that "the estimated tax revenue from online sports wagering is modest at best. It's a small return considering the long list of negative consequences that come with legalized gambling. Hawai’i already struggles with low average household income, some of the highest consumer debt levels in the nation, a lack of financial literacy programs, and widespread poor spending habits. Job creation is minimal. Legalizing gambling sends the wrong message. And finally, this proposal clashes with how Hawai’i presents itself to the world. We market ourselves as family-friendly, wellness focused, and rooted in community. Online gambling undermines that image and threatens a brand we've spent generations building."

Representative Shimizu’s 'NO' vote reflects a commitment to protecting Hawai’i’s values, families, and economic future from the real harms of legalized gambling. Visit capitol.hawaii.gov to learn more about SCR121 and HB1308.
