This email is about my story and my family — and to be honest, it’s a bit on the longer side. So if you’re in a hurry and you already know you’re with me in the fight to keep this ultra-competitive district blue, I hope you’ll consider making a donation today.

Just a few short years ago, I never thought I would be involved in politics.
In 2016, I was a law professor at UC Irvine. My wife, Jane, and I had just welcomed our third child. And we were eager for our children to grow up in the same America we got to grow up in, a nation that is kind, inclusive, and compassionate, where we celebrate diversity and promote economic opportunity for everyone, not just the wealthy and powerful.
But then Donald Trump came along.
Just minutes into his inaugural address, it was clear that Trump was hell-bent on attacking the values that make our nation great: inclusion, tolerance, democracy, and the rule of law. Following the announcement of his appalling Muslim ban shortly afterward, I knew I had to take action.
So I protested in the streets. I was vocal in telling everyone who might listen that I was angry about the assaults on our most cherished American values and institutions — and that they should be angry too. And in 2020, I ran for State Senate on this message in a bright red Republican district that had never been represented by a Democrat — and I won.
In Sacramento, I fought for progress on the issues that matter most to our community. I helped pass legislation to address the epidemic of gun violence, authored legislation to end offshore oil drilling, offered support to small businesses during the height of the pandemic, protected survivors of domestic violence, defended reproductive freedom, and so much more.
Today, I’m proud to be fighting for those same priorities in Washington — so that my children, and children all across Orange County, can grow up and grow old in a world that is safe, clean, caring, and welcoming.
My parents came to this country from Korea decades ago in search of their American Dream. And today, they never could have imagined that their son would be fighting in the halls of Congress to protect that dream for everyone who calls America home, regardless of where you come from, what you look like, or who you love.
I am living proof that the American Dream is still alive. But today, because of the dangerous and reckless actions of Donald Trump, that dream feels out-of-reach for so many families across Orange County. Instead of standing up for the values that make our country great, Trump and his MAGA movement are doing everything in their power to make America less free, less tolerant, less affordable, and more cruel.
That’s why I’m fighting back in Congress each and every day.
Listen, I know that the challenges that lie ahead of us won’t be easy. But I’m no stranger to tough fights, and I’m ready to work harder than ever before to push back against MAGA extremism and make sure everyone has access to the American Dream. If that mission speaks to you, I hope you’ll consider making a donation to support this grassroots team.
