We’re 100 days into Donald Trump’s presidency.
The economy is tanking, Trump is openly defying Supreme Court orders, and the chaos and cruelty are affecting so many New Jerseyans.
One thing is clear: we need to throw out the old playbook.
This week, I published an op-ed on the important takeaways from the last few months, and how we move forward. You can read the whole thing here, but I wanted to share the highlights.
Number one: If you’re defending the status quo, you’re losing. People knew that Trump could bring chaos and destruction, and they still picked that over a Democratic Party that, in their minds, seemed threatened by the thought of changing anything at all.
Number two: We can’t be afraid to play hardball. That means using every ounce of leverage in the House and the Senate. Many Democrats, myself included, were incredibly frustrated to see some Senate Democrats give up their leverage in the government funding fight. They can’t make the same mistake again when funding expires on Sept. 30.
Number three: We need to win, and then we need to prove that Democratic governance works for people. This is the really crucial one. Governance in blue states and cities hasn’t been working well enough. Look no further than skyrocketing rents, broken transit, or expensive utility bills — or just look at the election results.
States like New Jersey are where we can make our stand. We can send a shot across the bow ahead of the 2026 elections with a big victory, and then we have to be aggressive about building more homes that people can afford, fixing our transit systems, driving down energy costs, and protecting our rights and freedoms.
I believe to my core that strong Democratic governors are the way forward — and that New Jersey is the place to prove that we can fix our institutions and make people’s lives better.
We may be 100 days into the administration, but we’re only 42 days out from Election Day, so I have to ask: Will you chip in a few bucks to help power our campaign? Every contribution adds up.
Thank you,
Mikie
