Dear Friend,
Today marks 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency. The start of his Administration has been defined by chaos and uncertainty, from DOGE chainsawing its way through federal support programs, to the devastation of our economy by reckless tariffs, to the rampant disregard for the Constitution and attacks on the judicial system.
Democrats are pushing back in the courts, on the House floor, through public protest, and on TV. And it’s working. Judges have held up hundreds of Trump’s lawless executive orders. Established institutions like Harvard are pushing back. And public sentiment is beginning to change as Americans are faced with the harsh reality of what Trump’s ruinous agenda means for them.
Here's a little of what I have been doing to fight back over the last 100 days:
Reckoning with the Economy
Donald Trump will lie to just about anyone, but he can’t fool the markets. And the markets are delivering a brutal verdict on the first 100 days of this presidency. With the unpredictable and reckless implementation of tariffs, many of which target our closest allies and trading partners, Trump has devastated the economy and perhaps irreparably damaged the United States’ global standing. Since January 20th, the S&P has fallen almost eight percent, the worst 100-day performance since 1974. Economists estimate that the Administration’s tariff agenda will cost American families nearly $5,000 a year as inflation spikes and consumer costs continue to rise. Trump may be claiming that egg prices are, “too low,” but he can’t hide from the fact that Americans are facing higher grocery costs, widespread layoffs, and significant losses to their retirement savings.
Defending Medicaid
189,800 people in CT-04 rely on Medicaid— 26% of the population. The recent budget resolution passed by Republicans would trigger hundreds of billions of dollars of cuts from the program, forcing community health centers to close, kneecapping local non-profits that rely on its support, and leaving millions of Americans without coverage. Earlier this month, I spoke on the House floor about Conner Curran, a 14-year-old boy from Ridgefield Connecticut, who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at four years old. Conner’s medications cost close to $100,000 per month and are covered by Medicaid. As Trump’s agenda becomes a reality, families like the Currans will be the ones who suffer. I will keep telling stories like Conner's to hold my Republican colleagues accountable for their actions.
Upholding the Constitution
Most presidents overreach their Executive authority at some point, which is why the Founding Fathers created the Judicial Branch as a check on the Oval Office. However, no president has ever pushed the boundaries of their power so often and so aggressively as Donald Trump. I was particularly troubled by Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel’s handling of the arrest of Wisconsin Judge Hannah Dugan—a blatant publicity stunt designed to intimidate any judges who stand up against this Administration. I am a Member of the Litigation Response Task Force, led by co-chairs Jamie Raskin, Greg Meeks, and Lois Frankel, which has filed a series of amicus briefs pushing back against Trump’s illegal actions. Democrats may be in the Congressional minority, but we will continue to fight tirelessly to ensure the courts remain the independent and apolitical guardrail they were intended to be.
Overseeing our National Security
As Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee, I have unique insight into the most pressing threats facing our national security, and how the intelligence community is poised to combat them. While I still have great faith in the experienced men and women who serve in those agencies, I have deep reservations about the leadership installed by Donald Trump—reservations amplified by the rash firings of experienced senior officials in critical roles. Please know that the Committee is working every day to conduct oversight of the eighteen agencies that comprise the intelligence community, and to ensure that they continue to protect Americans without violating your civil liberties. Last month, in my capacity as Ranking Member, I publicly questioned Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, FBI Director Kash Patel, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and other leadership about the Signal Group Chat that contained sensitive war plans. You can watch my opening remarks here.
Protecting Free Speech
Free speech is the fundamental pillar of a functioning democracy, which is why Donald Trump sees it as such a threat to his regime. Whether he is attacking the free press or deporting permanent residents for protesting, the President has been relentless in policing critics and opponents. I know that as a Member of Congress I am privy to some privilege and protections that many in this country are denied. As such, I intend to spend the next four years using my voice to advocate for my constituents and for all Americans who are unable to defend themselves.
Going Everywhere, Talking to Everyone
I believe that Democrats have historically underestimated the impact of podcasts, YouTube, and other new media, and the benefits of going on conservative outlets like Fox news. To that end, I have spent the last 100 days engaging wherever possible to tell the story of Donald Trump’s calamitous presidency and how his Administration is making this country less safe. I encourage you to check out some of the highlights below:
· Fox News: What Signalgate meant to our troops
· MeidasTouch: Trump’s capitulation to Putin
