This month, House Republicans passed the SAVE Act, which would require you to prove your citizenship in person with a birth certificate or passport just to vote or change your address.
Republicans are spinning this bill as harmless. But don’t be fooled — it’s one of the most dangerous voter suppression bills we’ve seen in years.
The bill’s alleged goal is to prevent non-citizens from voting. But here’s the thing: It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections.
Let me say that again: IT IS ALREADY ILLEGAL FOR NON-CITIZENS TO VOTE IN FEDERAL ELECTIONS.
Here are just a few ways it’ll cause BIG problems for a lot of Americans:
* If you changed your last name when you got married, your birth certificate might not match your ID and you could be considered ineligible to vote. Think about how many people we all know who fall under this category!
* If you’re serving overseas — including in our military — and can’t go in person to update your registration, you might be totally out of luck.
* If you don’t have $170 to spare for a passport, you could lose your right to vote.
* Or if, like me and countless other young people, you just need to call your mom to even figure out where your birth certificate is, you could be blocked from voting.
This bill could impact nearly 150 million Americans, which is almost as many who voted in 2024!
Bottom line — we should be making it easier for people to vote, not harder.
When I spoke out about how harmful this bill is, my MAGA-obsessed colleague Nancy Mace sniped, “ Dems are DESPERATE to protect their voter base .”
…women?! Is she talking about women?!
It sure seems like Rep. Mace accidentally said the quiet part out loud. House Republicans KNOW that their agenda is toxic to the vast majority of women — an agenda that strips away reproductive rights, laughs at pay parity, refuses to address the costs of child care and housing. And they’re hell bent on stopping Democrats from stopping them.
Right now, here are three things you can do to fight back against the SAVE Act’s voter suppression:
1. Call your Senator and tell them you strongly oppose the SAVE Act, and why. This is especially important if you live in a state with one or more Republican senators!
2. Talk about this bill to people in your life whose names may have changed. This could be married women in your family or friend group, LGBTQ+ folks who have changed their names, or anyone else who might have a different name than what’s on their birth certificate. Remind them that now is a good time to make sure they have their documents in order and their voter registration up to date.
3. Help make sure we’re ready to take back the House in 2026 so we can counter bad-faith GOP legislation like this. Donate today. [[link removed]]
We need to organize early, push back hard, and make sure every eligible voter can make their voice heard — so thanks for doing what you can!
I’ll keep fighting in every way I can from the House.
More to come,
Sara
