A more sustainable future

===================================

Dear Friend,

As I write to you, we are approaching the 100th day of the Trump administration—and well over 100 executive orders signed so far.

Several of these orders aim to roll back environmental protections and give free rein to fossil fuel companies. This takes us in the wrong direction when we urgently need to invest in climate solutions, and work to make our communities more sustainable and resilient.

But we are not bound to this path. There is a rich history of people coming together to push back against bad policies and entrenched interests.

Every day, I hear about ways our own AFSC community is working for environmental justice. I want to share some of the efforts giving me hope in this moment—efforts you are making possible:

- Acting at the local and state level: In New Mexico, AFSC and allies have supported legislation that would protect traditional systems of water sharing—ensuring people, crops, and wildlife can continue to thrive.
- Holding institutions accountable: We’re supporting direct action campaigns to hold institutions that profit from climate chaos accountable. This month AFSC joins the Vanguard S.O.S. campaign, which is pushing the largest global investor in fossil fuels to change course. [link removed]
- Supporting water defenders: From DeKalb County in Georgia to the highlands of Guatemala, communities are taking action to protect the right to unpolluted, affordable water.
- Promoting justice-centered policies: Thousands of people have joined us to ask representatives for a justice-centered Farm Bill—a policy package that would prioritize climate-friendly practices, worker rights, and food access for all.

As Earth Month draws to a close, I’m so glad to count you as part of the AFSC community. We recognize that building a more sustainable and equitable world is long-term, year-round work. With your help, we’ll keep working to build resilient communities. We’ll push back against harmful policies. And yes—we will even gain ground in the struggle for a more sustainable future.

In peace,

Brett Heinz
