John,

Right now, life can feel overwhelming. We've used words like "unprecedented" and "new normal," but it's hard to find the right words to describe the magnitude of what we're experiencing on the whole.

We are grieving lives lost to COVID-19. We are contending with treatment delays, isolation, the threat of the virus, and other obstacles for people with breast cancer. We are outraged and heartbroken over recent events that have once again exposed the depths and dangers of racism. As an organization deeply committed to ensuring everyone gets the best cancer care possible, we see racism as a public health crisis that cannot be ignored. We will continue to report on health disparities for people of color, including the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on African Americans, and we will join forces with other advocacy organizations to promote social justice and health equity.

With the weight of these issues affecting our daily lives, it's normal to feel anxious right now. If you need to talk with someone for support, there are helpful resources recommended by the National Institute of Mental Health. You are not alone. Please take care of your whole self, and make your mental health a priority.

Despite the turmoil, I have hope because of this community. So many people contributed to the Breastcancer.org COVID-19 Rapid Response fund over the past few months to make a real difference.

Right now, our team is developing a special report tracking the long-term impact of COVID-19 for people with breast cancer. I look forward to sharing the special report with you at a virtual town hall event this summer. We are focused on helping our community through every phase of the pandemic. The COVID-19 Special Report, the town hall, and the ongoing reporting are all made possible thanks to our generous supporters. We are in this together.

With gratitude,

Marisa C Weiss MD
