50 electric vans available on free trials to local firms
**A message from City Council Deputy Leader Cllr Sally Longford:**

Our local businesses need to be able to send and receive goods but that does create a lot freight being transported around the city, bringing associated carbon emissions and air quality issues. However, transporting goods does not have to have such a negative impact on the environment, for a while now in Nottingham we have been trialling a new approach.
Our popular Go Ultra Low Programme enabled businesses to road-test an electric fleet vehicle for up to a month and weve now received further funding, 2.69million, from Highways England to trial large electric vans as well as more cars and smaller vans. This funding will be used to set up the Electric Van Experience (EVE) Project, which will make 50 vehicles available to local companies to take on a try-before-you-buy arrangement until March 2022.
To ensure that Nottinghams Covid recovery is sustainable environmentally and economically it is vital that we support local businesses and I am delighted that we have been able to secure this additional funding for the city. At the end of scheme, any surplus vehicles will be incorporated in to the councils electric fleet.

*Carers Week helping you to support your loved ones*
Social care image
Carers Week this year has focused on unpaid carers; many people look after a family member, friend or neighbour but do not consider themselves to be a carer. As well highlighting all the support available to unpaid carers, the campaign has also asked people to consider making an emergency plan for the people they care for in case they themselves become unwell.

*Support for small businesses*
Nottingham Skyline
Small businesses are at the heart of the Nottingham economy and an essential part of our Covid recovery. They create jobs for thousands of local people and attract visitors and investment into the city. The lockdown and the ongoing social distancing measures that will be required are putting a huge financial strain on our local retail, leisure and hospitality community, and Government must continue to support them over the coming months.
Some financial support has been made available to small businesses and I urge all our local small businesses leaders to visit our online information Nottingham businesses Covid-19 updates [ [link removed] ] to ensure that any grant they are entitled to is utilised. However this isnt enough; we have written to the Business Secretary Alok Sharma urging him to prevent a 'spiral of decline' in town and city centres across the country slowing down our Covid recovery and well be utilising our networks over the coming months to lobby for further funding.
