[link removed] [[link removed]] Dear Friend,

Eighty years ago my grandmother and my mom were liberated by American soldiers from the Buchenwald concentration camp.

My grandmother, “Bubby” to me, has inspired how I show up in the world. She gave birth to my mom in that concentration camp several days before being liberated by U.S. troops. Never far from my mind are the people with courage who helped her—the supervisor who spared her life when she fell asleep on the job, the person who brought her bread while she was in labor, and the U.S. soldiers who served our nation and saved her life, at their own peril in a perilous time.

I am living an “only-in-America” story, where a kid from a hard-working immigrant family—new to this country as refugees and barely making ends meet—could work for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, President Barack Obama, be elected as your Attorney General, and now run for Governor. My family came here based on the promise of America, and they made it here based on the courage of good people to stand up for them and each other.

As I say to people now: fear is contagious, and so is courage.

In America, we are a nation that welcomes and celebrates people of diverse backgrounds. That celebration can include enjoying each other’s traditional foods. And my Bubby loved to bake.

When I first ran for Attorney General, I received an invitation from the Denver Young Democrats to participate in a bake-off. Deciding what to bake was an easy choice—I made my Bubby’s rugelach. Winning that bake-off (a good omen!) made Bubby’s award-winning rugelach a staple of our campaign.

After the bake-off, I posted my grandmother’s recipe online and received an outpouring of comments. As I explained at the time, the recipe had never been written down. My wife and I created it by watching Bubby make the rugelach and carefully noting the amounts.

One of the first responses to my post came from Jared Polis, who was then a candidate for Governor. He joked, “My grandmother’s recipe is better than yours,” and a challenge was born. After both Jared and I won our primaries, we hosted a fundraiser during the general election featuring a competition between his family’s rugelach recipe and mine. I’m proud to say we won that event—though to be fair, my kids’ passionate advocacy for Bubby’s rugelach likely tipped the scales in our favor.

To help friends and supporters make Bubby’s rugelach, we made a video of the recipe. You can watch it here:

In a fun twist, at one campaign event, a supporter brought her version of my Bubby’s rugelach for me to try. I told her it tasted better than mine and asked why. Her answer? “I used butter, not Crisco.” Over the years, our family has also added its own spin, swapping out Bubby’s traditional raisins, raspberry jelly, and walnuts for chocolate chips. Here’s a photo of my daughter and me making our version:

And as you talk about my campaign for Governor with others, feel free to tout Bubby’s award-winning rugelach!
