Black Maternal Health Week 2025 |
What to know: PRH was honored to join the Black Mamas Matter Alliance in celebration of Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), a week-long campaign from April 11th-17th, dedicated to spreading awareness, promoting intersectional activism, and prioritizing community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people.

✨NEW✨ on our blog for BMHW 2025: |
We sat down with Drs. Keri Garel, Joi Spaulding, Maura Jones Pullins, Eryn Wanyoni to discuss Black Maternal Health Week, the intersections of racism and maternal health outcomes, and so much more. |

Taryn Graves, PRH Policy Assistant, discusses the overlooked legacy of Black midwives, whose vital role in maternal care was systematically undermined by racism in medicine. From the era of slavery to modern-day criminalization threats, Black midwifery has faced consistent scrutiny and marginalization.
We must act as allies in advocating for and supporting the midwifery profession by learning from and uplifting birth justice organizations that carry forward the legacy of Black midwifery and honor the Black community’s vital, ongoing contributions to reproductive health, rights, and justice.

Jezebel featured statements from PRH President & CEO Dr. Jamila Perritt in their coverage of the Trump administration’s plan to freeze $35 million in Title X funding—a vital program that provides access to essential preventive health services like birth control, STI testing and treatment, and cancer screenings.
|
"Their desire to control who gets pregnant, who stays pregnant, who has the privilege of surviving their pregnancies, and who receives access to resources to raise families is violent and dangerous."

In an op-ed for The Nation, Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi, a Texas-based OB-GYN and PRH Board Chair, explains her opposition to the proposed “Life of the Mother Act” (HB 44/SB 31), arguing that it fails to provide the necessary clarity for physicians to offer life-saving abortion care without fear of legal repercussions.
She emphasizes that the bill's vague language perpetuates a chilling effect, leading to delays and denials of critical medical treatment, and warns that such legislation could serve as a harmful model for other states. |
"Some will say we should take what little we can get because we are in Texas… But I’m an ob-gyn who has dedicated my career to providing abortion care for Texans: I don’t beg for crumbs at the expense of my community.”
- Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi |
