At state and federal levels, we’re facing a wave of new and stricter legislation that, if enacted, would require an ID to register and vote: -
The SAVE Act is currently being considered by the US Senate after passing in the House of Representatives earlier this month. This voter suppression bill would wreak havoc on our national elections by requiring documentary proof of citizenship (like a passport or birth certificate) to even register to vote. Millions of eligible voters do not have ready access to these kinds of documents.
-
"Californians for Voter ID," a group led by state Republicans via grassroots apparatus Reform California, is preparing to gather signatures to put a voter ID and proof of citizenship ballot referendum for a constitutional amendment before voters in November 2026. Initial polling and historical precedent indicate a strong likelihood of this moving forward and the deceptive referendum passing to disastrous consequences unless we act now.
- In Texas, the State Senate passed a dangerous proof of citizenship bill earlier this month. It is now being considered in the Texas House of Representatives.
-
In Florida, the state legislature is considering legislation that would remove student ID from the list of accepted IDs at the polls, and also impose onerous and costly documentary proof of citizenship requirements on voters.
Millions of voters risk losing their right to vote if we don’t work to stop these dangerous bills and mitigate the harm they cause.
