The process of creating Wisconsin’s 2025-26 budget is in full swing, and we have to ask: Are we putting our money where our values are?
I know you and I share certain core values: justice, equity, and the belief that all people deserve to live free from violence. Now I’m asking you to take 1 minute to stand up for those values: urge the Joint Finance Committee to fully fund the Office of Violence Prevention and the Office of School Safety. These programs help create a safer Wisconsin by centering children and vulnerable communities. They empower all of us to help stop violence before it starts.

Why It Matters
Last week the federal government again reinforced their vastly different priorities by ending millions in funding for community-based safety efforts. This includes rescinding money that had already been promised in grants, making it absolutely critical that we fund this work at the state level. [[link removed]]
The Office of Violence Prevention supports community-based strategies to stop violence before it starts. That means working with trusted neighborhood partners to mediate conflicts, connecting young people to mentors and jobs, and supporting survivors of violence. These are practical, proven approaches that save lives—and save taxpayer dollars.
Meanwhile, the Office of School Safety provides critical tools to keep students safe -- everything from mental health support to a tip line, where students can share safety concerns.
Add your voice now, and remind our elected leaders that justice and peace are values that people across our state will not give up on.
