Team,

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen millions of Americans peacefully take to the streets calling for justice for George Floyd and countless others brutalized by police. But they’re calling for more than just change in policing practices -- they’re demanding a real reckoning in our country where we address issues of inequality in education, healthcare, housing, and so much more.

Here in Washington, D.C., crowds have been gathering outside the White House to call on President Trump to do something about it. And once again, President Trump has failed this most basic test of leadership.

Rather than listening to their demands, President Trump called for a brutal crackdown on peaceful protestors and journalists covering them. Rather than offering solutions, President Trump has threatened to use the United States military to occupy American cities and attack his fellow citizens if they refuse to end their demonstrations.

Enough is enough.

It’s not just us saying this. We’ve seen, over the past few weeks, prominent military voices speaking out about the President’s manifest unfitness for his office and his inability to lead us through the challenges we face as a nation.

With the President’s failure in the face of crisis on full display, Americans heard from the most prominent military leader we’d been waiting for: retired Marine Corps General and former Trump-appointed Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis. In a scathing interview, Gen. Mattis argued that Trump “does not even pretend to try” when challenged to unite his country. Having seen Trump’s lack of “mature leadership” first-hand, Mattis broke his silence to warn the nation that the President was using nationwide turmoil as part of a “deliberate effort” to further divide the nation against itself.

Gen. Mattis also got a lot of backup from his former military colleagues:

Retired Adm. Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, argued it was “impossible to remain silent" any longer "on issues surrounding President Trump's leadership.”
In a rare public statement, another former Joint Chiefs chairman, retired Gen. Martin Dempsey, condemned Trump's threat to suppress protests with military force as "dangerous" and "very troubling."
Retired Marine Corps Gen. John Allen gave perhaps the sharpest rebuke, saying Trump's crackdown on demonstrators to stage a photo op in front of a church "may well signal the beginning of the end of the American experiment.”
Serve America is committed to elevating principled leaders willing to face these and other challenges together. We’re proud that these former military officers had the courage to speak out, and we call on all Americans to follow their example and unite in the face of Trump’s bigotry and authoritarianism.

Trump has turned his White House into a bunker to shield him from accountability. While he retreats behind walls, we will be with you in the streets, and we’ll guarantee all of our voices are heard in November.
